Time for a test fit and all I could say was... nice!
Even the rust shadow from the original 3 finger apron lines up. Can't ask for much better than that.
This apron will still need some more work but definately 1000% better.

So back to the front clip to "59" it. The clip pressings are correct for the vert but came of a later beetle with front indicators rather than wire tube fenders.
So out with the step drill and the wire tube fender mounting holes put in.

Also missing from the clip are the wiring harness tabs. The back of the spare wheel well also has dimples at each of the tab locations.

Cut some sheet metal tabs and welded them in. Not so easy as the access to the outside ones is tight. Also added some dimples.
After welding the tabs in place I took the opportunity to anneal them to soften them up. Don't want them snapping of later.

beautiful work as always.
I've said it before but it is worth repeating. this will be the best restored 'vert in Australia when it's finished. |

Some further work on getting the clip correct before it gets gafted onto the front. Still a couple of wiring harness tabs and indicator harness holes to weld up.

Shed time has been few and far between over the last couple of months. Cold weather and life just gets in the way of bringing old vw's back to life.
When I can steel time I have been slowly getting the new front clip onto the vert. Sneaking up on it as I can't stuff this up.
Dry fit up was looking really good. The batch of a Germal body with an Australian made front clip is better than I expected.

Using the tank frame as a reference and making everything sure things are square and level got to the point to where I was happy to screw things in place.

The there was no other option other than to make the final incision. Alignment of the panels on the RH side worked out well. Now onto the LH side before finishing the welding. Just in case...

Thanks Henry. Time flys but this time of year really drags on with the cold weather. _________________ I hate rust!

Slow progress this year. Looking back over the last posts I can't believe how fast time has gone.
Anyhow, some progress is better than none. Front clip is now welded on with just some final finishing to go. If I do this again I would change my cut line so as to keep all of the original side panel above the fender beading. Still not happy with the blending in these areas.
