it really wasn't what I wanted to do with it, at least not my first choice anyway. I have a vivid picture in my head of what I want it to look like when I'm done. I ran into some trouble getting parts and decided to go with my second choice... volksrod.
Then I got burnt out on it because I felt like I was constantly making sacrifices. Like the way I wanted the dash and instrumentation... I didn't feel like it would "work" for a volksrod, so I tried to come up with the best compromise. The seats I wanted just didn't seem to work for a volksrod. The exhaust I wanted, etc etc. I wound up constantly trying to figure out what I could do to make it how I thought it should be, but still make myself happy. When I say "wouldn't work for a volksrod" I mean from MY perspective.
There were also other things that contributed to giving up . MY conception of a volksrod is either a roadster or a choptop. I don't have a garage so the roadster was out, and I don't have the skills, money, or equipment to chop a top, and I sure don't have the balls to cut a windshield. LOL.
So, I haven't given up on the car, just on it being a volksrod, I have resolved to make it the way I wanted, even if it takes longer.

I hear ya.. we are our own and biggest critics for sure..
Im a Drive it kinda guy... if you dont like it... I could care less.. but I HAVE to like it..
Judging by a quick skim of the Rocco Baja build... to Rocco Volksjarod, and now back to Baja.???? You have a hard time making yourself happy... Thats a big key with building a car from scratch... pleasing yourself...If you really nit pick it... it will never be done. You must create to your ability, and if you cant... time to pay those who can..

You can give the illusion of a chop top with a visor... ....
Volksrods DONT have to always have a chop top..

Ken,
you are totally correct, I have had a hard time making myself with this project. I've been trying to do what I can with what I have and a super limited budget. The reason I have flip flopped so much is because , like I said, I kept settling for something I thought I could live with just for the sake of getting it done.
Now, I've realized if I'm going to be happy with it, I have to do it the way I want it, even if it takes a decade or more.
SOMEDAY, it will be a slammed baja. Then if I ever have a garage, I'll build a volksrod roadster :]
I really like the visor , by the way.

Ok so I just bought my first beetle with intensions of building a volksrod. This may be a stupid question but I'm a total newby at this. If I install a 10" beam extender, should I also install a new frame head brace, or can I just install the beam extender itself?

X2... definitely...!!!
If the upper beam to body mount is eliminated.. it eliminates the upper support fot the entire frame head.
Thats a TON of leverage without anything keeping it from folding into a fortune cookie...

Volkswagnut and ChrisMac, thanks for the replies. I found a whole package on volksrodshop.com for $700 I think I'm goin to go with.

Maybe another rookie question, but when you chop the top do you have to have custom class made or have the existing glass altered? Man I feel like a real rookie with all my questions. I got lots, but I jus wanna make sure I'm doin this right and I don't wanna end up with a pile crap that wasn't done correctly.

Extender and Frame Head braces in the classified..

You can decide on which and who you want to go with..

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?...ton=Search

All glass will need to be custom made for a chop top.

The laminated windshield is the only glass that can be cut down.

ALL the others are tempered.. which means.. in most cases once formed it cant be cut.
Some have sanded, sand blasted, water jetted, tempered glass.. other have simply made a pile of fragments.

New side and door glass can be cut from laminated glass from templates .. but always think and plan during your build... what to do for the rear body window.

Lexan can carefully be heated to bend and form... but sometimes looks likes fun house glass.
