Depends on if you are using stock sized pulleys or not.

I've found the 905 to be hard to adjust correctly with a 36 hp.

I have a 9.5 X 900 belt on my 1600DP engine and am looking for a spare as well. I understand that there is a difference when it comes to adjustment.

905 v. 900 turns out to be 2.5mm on each side (as you look at it); that should be easy to adjust if you have all 10 thin washers to play with.

SPZ 887 Lw

Shocked
Well maybe too minimalistic answer.
Search for this and you should find plenty of old looking belts without the molded teeth in 900mm length (SPZ 887 Lw = 900mm).

XPZ 887 Lw is the counterpart with the molded teeth.

It really does depend on what pulleys you have and the shims that you have. I find one tightens better than the other with mine. I can't remember which one I have. Actually it's the one my parts guy sells.

Great thread, following this closely...
I'm trying to find which belt gives me "center of the road" adjustability with stock components. By this I mean using all 10 shims as a starting point would appreciate finding a belt that allows me to be able to maintain correct deflection of belt tension and not run out of shims over the life of the belt. My experience is that I start out with a couple of shims and within a year or so, I'm down to one or less shim?! My 67 has stock generator, tower and pulleys. Do shims vary in thickness?

Not trying to over think this but there has to be a belt that offers maximum adjustability so we can keep our rigs running without having to change the belt out so often. I would bet the belts used today have evolved since these cars were made 50 years ago...probably like tires.
Thanks for any thoughts.
John

Manuals are great for this info.

Here from the Owner's Manual for '62.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You can access the Owner's Manuals thru the "Technical" button at upper right.

Have you found any Owner's Manuals in Italian?? Sure would be nice to get scans of such for this website.

I can't understand from this picture .. it shows with arrow that some shims are moved so I don't understand which is the correct number.

Not sure what you mean by a "couple of shims". Maybe a couple of shims between pulley halves?? Should be eight with new belt. If you are using a larger than stock, but still VW produced crankshaft pulley for hotter climates you might even need ten shims.

A year or so is not a really good scale to use. Some folks will only drive 300 miles or less and some will do 20,000 miles or more driving.... Personally have gotten 15,000 to 20,000 miles per year, and probably five or six years on a belt.

You can go thru a belt in less than 20 miles if the pulleys are rusty! So good idea to inspect both for rust or any sharp/rough surfaces where the belt rides. A little sand paper and elbow grease can solve that.

The arrows just show where to put the shims when the belt wears down. With new properly sized belt, all eight shims should be between the pulley halves.

Please do consider sending Everett scans of your Owner's Manual.

Precisely my issue, installing a 9.5x905 belt I usually only get 2 shims inbetween pulley halves to where belt tension is correct on a new belt. I'm looking for a better spec belt to get at least 5 or more in between to start so I have some wear in room. I believe the 905 belt is correct for my year stock application. I live in PNW and temps are mild; I have a stock pulley set up. I drive low miles per year (under 1000).

So what belt spec would you recommend for changing my parameters?
Thanks for your thoughts.

1. I don't think you even have "an issue". Use the 905 belt you have.

2. With your usage of 1000 miles a year, I figure your belt will last 54.37 years, so you really don't have a real issue to worry about.

3. I run my own belts a little loose on purpose, can't rotate the engine using generator pulley nut unless I push in on the belt while turning. I do this because generator bearings or generators are a minor pain to replace, and my charging and cooling is not affected.

You can try a 9.5 x 900 belt then. Since the 900 mm is a shorter belt it should ride farther down in the upper pulley requiring more shims between the pulley halves.

When we went to a 7" diameter stock dog house crankshaft pulley and smaller 356 Porsche gen pulley for the 1641 cc SP engine in our 1960 walk thru panel camper conversion for more cooling air pumped over the engine. Went down to the FLAPS on a quiet day for them, and very politely asked if I could carefully check several sizes of belts to see what would fit properly. Also told them I would not try to just pry the belt into place like some idiots will try. I had backed the Bus into the parking spot right outside the store front window so they could see what I was doing, which was probably reassuring for them. Then took two sizes of belts out each time to try. After fitting a few got the right size that worked with all the shims between the pulley halves.

Other way you could do it is to try the bigger stock pulley than what you have now. What size does is the one you have now? Guessing 6-3/4".

Bigger lower pulley will help cool the engine better. Up in the PNW we can get weather that is hotter than the N. part of Europe.
