I would like to compile a fun fact sheet for all the Wild Westerners.

To do this all Wild Westerner owners please use the m-code decoder and display the production date and destination of your Bus as I have (see below).

To all non owners that have supplied us with a m-code picture please post the Production Date and Destination along with the serial number.

I'm thinking having this information on the club cards would be a cool addition as well.

Mine is on the way! Very Happy

I used uShip.com to find someone who does it on their own, and was headed to Washington the other day, so they picked up the bus on Saturday.

I spoke to the driver's wife yesterday, and she said they'd either be here tonight, or tomorrow morning!

Can't wait!

Super... When it arrives You can do the Manhattan Shuffle and the rest of us will have a tattie.

The great state of Kansas is now the home of a Wild Westerner VW Bus.

It would be cool as hell to have one running and driving in each state.

Its five o'clock somewhere .... Cheers ...

Very Happy

Guess what arrived this evening?

I've only had a chance to give it a quick once-over, but overall I would say the body seems to be in decent shape, with some fairly deep surface rust forming under the floor mats. Doesn't seem to be rust-through at all, but will need to be arrested sooner rather than later.

Seats are very rough, though.

Overall, I think it is in pretty nice pretty original shape and I don't think I'll want to do a full-resto by any means. My goals will be more geared toward preservation I think.

For example, I think rather than welding and such with the surface rust, I'll probably hit it with some kind of converter and cover it, and lay the mats back down.

I'll also need to replace the window seals, they are all getting very dry and cracked and not really sealing much of anything, I fear.

I'm really interested in the full slider windows, and may go that route with them when I get to replacing the seals. We'll see.

Those are my thoughts at this point.

Pulled the engine last night. It has been a long time since pulling an aircooled engine, so I needed to consult the Bentley to make sure I didn't forget anything!

Since Craig said he thought the cam was busted or otherwise messed up, I'll need to crack it open to see what's up for sure.

I was kind of hoping his diagnosis was incorrect so I did attempt to crank it over a couple times but no luck. Pulling a valve cover indicated no pushrod movement, while the engine did build oil pressure. I expect to find a broken camshaft just past the gear, or possibly it came unbolted from the gear. (I think he had installed an aftermarket cam.)

Oh well, it sat for a long time and the gas was really really nasty. Luckily there wasn't much left (probably evaporated over time, though it appears it may have leaked out past the carb too). I imagine pulling the tank will be time well spent.

Expert advice needed....
Seems to me abt 30 years ago i recall there being a spring loaded push rod tube that would allow you to replace the tubes with the heads still on.
If so what brand is recommended and are there any tips on installation of the tubes?

By the way, that was a hell of a race today...did u see it..
What race?

Type 4 push rod tubes can already be removed without removing the head.

Just gotta pull the rockers and push rods. Then (unless they are stuck) you just need to wiggle them out through the hole in the head.

I have seen them for Type 1 engines. Type 4 engines you remove the rocker arms and the tubes slide out. Good Luck

The bumper and flat black treatment makes it properly dead to us. I spit in its general direction and henceforth give it the shunning it deserves.

Hey hey hey, it isn't the buses fault it was so terribly abused! It is the owner who did that who needs to be spat near!

Of course like all things the westerner can once again accept it's true nature and be introduced back into the fold.

As long as it pretends to be something it's not, shunning is appropriate.

Amish rules apply here. Razz

Accepting their poor decisions will only encourage more defacement of the weirdness that the westerner embodies. It's like drawing a handlebar mustache on the Mona Lisa.

So strap on the straw hats and turn your collective backs brothers, until someone buys that and applies liberal amounts of easy-off oven cleaner. There is no shame in baring your true colors.

No no no, this is "blame the victim" mentality!

The Westerner didn't ask to have an early bumper hacked on. The Westerner certainly didn't ask to have flat black paint covering its beautiful greens!

That poor bus was abused, and need to be rescued, and the abuser brought to justice!

It is going to take a lot of hard work by others to help the Westerner once-again emerge from its abuse, and be able to show its former self.

Put together a build thread for my Westerner.

Link is in my signature.

Edit:

I just put two and two together (after re-reviewing the M-Code info), and realized that the Beasterner was picked up from Craig by my friend, Val, on its birthday-May 17!

It was delivered to me a month later.

How cool is that? A new chance at life seems like a fitting birthday.
