I need to thank John Copello for the great work on my hinges. The doors hang perfect and move like butter. Also Danny Gabbard for the great work on my front fenders and battery tray. |
My pass side door hinges need a rebuild. Can you tell me what John charges for a set of hinges?
Thanks

I think it was $45ea for steel and $35ea for aluminum but it has been a while |

Thanks, coming from you means a lot to this metal rookie. Helps to have good metal to work with from that Gab Fab place . I learned a lot looking at your post.
I wish you would have had more parts available . That would have made this all much easier. Maybe in the future?
Now I have to decide on how to best clean off the rest of the car, what primer to use and what paint to use and how will my old spray guns work? Have not painted a full size project in 30 years but have done a lot of cars in Scale since then.
Keep on keepin on |

Received the quote and samples from SMS today. They make the heat seamed door panels and have all the interior vinyl's. Colors look great and the cloth is a dead ringer for original fabric. Now I need to find the proper T111 carpet which was a gray fuzzy carpet, not a square weave. Of course the car was originally mostly rubber mats so being original is not that important in this area.
Also need to locate a good quality light gray headliner.
Going to start leading soon. |

having a difficult time getting the lips on the arches to my satisfaction. I don't have a clean example to go by either.
I need to develop some sort of form or tool to get the radius on the lip to be smooth. I don't want filler in this area. |

Wow! How did you get the mirror out without mangling the housing? How would one put a new on back in? |

I actually have more "mangles' than I wanted but I went too fast and used the wrong tools at first. Don't use skinny metallic objects!
Find a very hard thin plastic and slowly start working your way around one half of the mirror. It will relax over time and you can work the mirror out the bottom half.

Santa came a day or so late but I just received an email that my interior panels have been packaged and ready to ship.
I am on pins and needles.
I will post picts as soon as I receive the panels.
Now a friend and I are hot on the trail of a good industrial sewing machine so we can sew up the seats. |

Discovered I am probably missing one retainer strip for the window scraper/felt retainer system. It is the strip in the first pict. Very thin metal so I am probably going to replicate it myself. Looks easier than pounding out a nose ridge. |

I was looking at some old photos of lowlights the other night and I saw a chrome piece that goes over the rubber strap which holds the upper back seat in place. Another part I need to find.
It is the chrome piece where the screw goes into the back seat
Anyone know where I can get one?
Found this pict on the Samba. It is the Dolphin Blue that my car will also be
I sure would love one of those clock ash trays to! |

I have a extra one of those from a kit I bought years ago that has all the screws and strap but it wasn't chrome but more of a gold cad finish so I bet you can find one of them more easy than you think and just get it plated if needed. _________________ It's not about the window, it's about the people.

I hope so. I think I am down to this piece and the thin strip inside the door that holds the felt strip and window scraper.
That should be it for old parts. Everything else is just replacing ALL the rubber bit Until I find something else missing LOL. |

The bottom of the rear seat was pretty warped and cracked so I made a new section out of a thicker wood then I cut the reliefs deeper to allow it to drop back down.
The upper portion of the seat was in pretty good shape except one joint was loose so I re-glued that. I then filled all the holes with a strong wood putty.
Now I just need some patterns and start working on the coverings |

Learning to sew with welt. Started with the easy piece. This fabric is not the fabric I will end up with just test material. I think with a bit of practice I can get the lines straighter. I used the original pad as it was in good shape and the part tag is shown at the bottom. The wood part I recently made also.

Looks great! Did you sew using a regular sewing machine, or was it by hand? |
I picked up a reconditioned Pfaff 145 then changed the motor to a servo and modified the optical sensor so it can be easily controlled. A rookie trying to do an interior and a clutch motor did not get along.
The slower the better when doing the welt.
As a kid I did some stuff with machines I found at garage sales and would go though a couple for one car but I did not use welt back then. Just light fabrics. This machine had some strain on it I could tell, then when crossing a folded seam and the welt I actually broke a needle but may have been my fault. |

Loosely tacked on the test pattern so the side edges need a ton more staples to smooth out. Only problem I am having is the upper corners. On the original seat those corners are shredded. I think I will increase the end cuts and then figure out how to sew it to make a box corner. I had to make a foam pad and the original must have been pretty deep so I had to use much more foam than expected. Just a few mods and the back should be figured out now
The fronts I have to start from scratch using pictures. Onward! |
