My '54 had the same thing. I welded on a new section of rod to the top and ground it smooth and it looked perfect. Just tap threads on the top and you are good to go. I think 3/8" rod was almost exactly the same size and was not noticeable.
I ground each end to a point so it looked like two pencils pointing at each other. This gives you plenty of surface area and penetration for a good strong weld. I then cut a groove in a piece of 2" x 4" to use as a V block and cut out a section around where the two sections would come together so I could weld them together without setting the 2 x 4 on fire. I then clamped both pieces in the 2 x 4 and welded the two pieces together.
I put together this quick and dirty drawing. If you need more info let me know.

... yup my '54 had the same short shifter... I was told that was made shorter, back in the 70s to emulate the sports car feel... installed a correct length strait one and kept the shortie in my stash... _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

I had to take the rear seat upholstery off of the WRONG seats and install them on the CORRECT '55 rear seat frames courtesy of Chris Vallone !!! Thanks Chris !!!
That looks and fits so much better and lays back where it's supposed to. Front seats look better when everything fits like it should.
I've had to re-do a lot of things to make them work right and I shouldn't have had to. If you're following/reading this STAY AWAY FROM VINTAGE METAL WERKS in Ohio.

Coming together!
Another thing a judge will notice is the e-brake should be the same color as seats, shifter, steering column. |

For VMW's, was it the assembly portion?
Their metal work/paint seems top notch. |
