Im doing a little project with my 1968 bug. I started with replacing all the tie rods, ball joints, brake pads, wheels cylinders, wheel bearings. My front beam had some cancer on the shock towers so while I was at it I scratch built a 4" narrowed beam with adjusters. Lowering wasnt in the cards but I kind of got the itch and went with it.
Here she is the day I got her

now on to the suspension. When I was driving her back I noticed the front felt loose and a ton of steering wheel play. Instead of just replacing one bad thing at a time, I went for it all. And before you say it, yes those are urethane bushings. I have talked to a couple locals that swear by them so we will see! squeak, squeak squeak
First things first was getting a tire that could fit in the fender well. I originally had 195/65/15s (on the rear currently) They were out of 145s at the local shop so Im going to skid my way through stop lights with these 135s;)
Looked at my beam and noticed the shock towers were rusty. So I decided to go ahead and build a 4" beam from all new metal and throw some adjusters on it
New beam progress
Little paint
bolted in

Now on to the rear, I have a swing axle rear end so I did not want to completly dump it because Im not a huge fan of camber. So I played around with splines until I got what I wanted. I did some modification to my springplates but ill talk more about that after some road testing
3 clicks;) too dang low!
Here it sits now with my lowered front ball joints binding
I want a decent ride so I have these ready to be installed tonight

I decide while my 68 gas tank is pulled out that I wanted to swap to the early tank and shave off that ugly gas door.
little bit of paint, the new one I got was flat black, I wanted gloss
test fitting
Tonight Im going to paint that front hood area and clean it up. There is surface rust all over the place..ugly! |

Got some work done over the weekend and got her road worthy. Had my 10 year old niece help me blead my new master cylinder
got the new steering box in
heres a shot of the drop spindles, brake lines and ball joints
Also got a new roof rack, a bug just cant be a bug without one!
Few shots at the new stance
Most of the under hood detail done, used hammer finish rustolium. turned out ok. the early gas tank looks great in there imo
Its a vw thing
Couldnt live without it
Heres a few videos of the maiden voyage. road great, drove great, drove straight. Everything I could ask for

From here I need to run the valves, oil change, re check wheel bearing tightness/brake adjustment. Then next is probably some much needed bodywork _________________ My little build thread

Added some dingles to the windshield
