That's kind of what I also thought Tom. Pulling off the cap and wiping it out is not doing anything. Take the whole thing apart and get down to the guts of it. Clean, inspect for problems wth the centrifical weights, springs, and pivots and then lubricate all the moving parts.

did you find some iron filings perhaps on the ring? I am thinking maybe there is a problem with the pickup or sender. The change of timing with heat is typically what you will see when an electronic ignition goes bad. Put your spare distributor in and see what happens.

Tooster- Check the 2 Ignitor wires inside the distributor. Check them when the advance plate is at rest and also when it is fully rotated. Chck the insulation on them also. If they were too taut or too much slack they can rub on the rotor wearing off the insulation or cause other problems. Since they are not permantly molded to the rubber block that exits the distributor side wall they can get pulled out or pushed in and cause problems. Obviously you have inspected the magnet ring by now to look for any cracks or breaks. They fit snug on the lobes and if they were tightly forced on they can crack. As far as the air gap, at least on one of mine there is no adjustment. If it's tightly screwed down to the advance plate it's where it should be. If the shaft has a side slop then that would cause problems but it would take a lot to mess up the air gap. If you slip in another distributor with points and it works don't necessarily think it was a Pertronix problem. More likely a distributor problem. But hopefully you'll soon find what the real issue is. From most everything I know about the Ignitors is that if they fail they fail dead and usually from being hooked up wrong or ignition left on.

Steve, just where are these iron filings going to come from? Although maybe carbon dust from the distributor cap center button. And where and when did you gain this experience that every ignition problem can be blamed on the evil Pertrornix ignitors? Laughing You wouldn't have had one in your T-4 you've had the last few years but maybe back in the '70's and 80's for the 10 years you had the other bus? Doubt it. For those of us that have been using them for many years we've learned they are about the last thing to be concerned with. I'm not saying that they or anything is totally bullet proof but no need for all the ongoing hatred. Laughing Wink
