A few months back my mechanic mentioned my rough idle at warm up may have been due to a faulty Aux Air Regulator. I never got around to replacing it before my cam gave way and I began to get into a full tear down and rebuild. I'm a few weeks away from getting the engine back into the bus and wanted to make sure everything is in perfect working order to ensure my engine lasts.

Well my engine's out so I needed a way to test the Aux Air Regulator. It turns out the heating element inside the AAR does not have polarity (information missing from the Bentley) so I stripped the leads on a spare 12V dc adapter and held each lead against a terminal. The rotary valve inside took between 60-90 seconds to close fully. I put the AAR in the freezer and the valve opened a little more than half way. Good to go!

I've never had an issue with testing exactly as per Bentley. It is rarely the heating element that fails on these; it is the aperture adjustment that goes out of spec. So, even a seemingly working AAR can be a cold start issue if the aperture has closed over time. 60-90 seconds to close sounds about ideal.
