Removed some dents in the front end. Thanks everyone for the excellent advice! I used the tried and true football method. I bought two different sizes at Walmart for this job. It's not perfect, but it's a heck of a lot better!
The tools:
A couple before shots:
After football repair:

Spent some time fighting out the old broken mirror pins. These things were a pain. I soaked them for days and days to get them to move. Combination of twisting them back and forth and hammering them out from below. I've replaced them with some after market mirrors for now - but I already hate them and so I'm hunting for some originals. I also installed the headlight assemblies I picked up at the Great Canadian VW show this summer.

New Tires are on! I ordered these Federal 195 R15 through Foutain Tire here in Prince George. Thanks to Darren Muis for all of your advice on tires!!! I'm trying to achieve a stance that is close to stock, but I wanted to go with a radial tire instead of a bias ply. Here are some shots of the bus. This is the first time it has been on all 4 tires since I bought this bus!!! I have it on rollers so I can roll it around my shop. Still need to do some adjustments to get the height right in the back end.

Ok. It's been a while since I've posted any updates. I have been busy working on the engine. I had originally aquired a '59 engine, but the case was rotten on the bottom (must have been sitting on the ground a very long time). I recently picked up several very complete 36hp engines from Alberta and one of them was a 1956 engine that was in amazing shape. A buddy of mine went through the distributor, rebuilt the carb, generator, fuel pump and installed new piston rings, a new coil, and a new exhaust. Runs like a top! Now I need to find the correct oil bath air filter for it.

I bought a set of original PGSG Wolfsburg bullet turn signal lenses. I found this 1956 British Columbia license plate at a swap meet. I just ordered a tail light lens and a brake light lens online.

You bet! I'll finally have a summer when I don't have to be at U of C! Keep me posted about what's going on this summer. I'd love to cruise out your way and see the Alberta bus crew ! _________________ 1956 pgsg bus

Nice work Steve!
That bus is tits, really!
Get an 010 distributor and a crank start nut for that engine("bus correct") and it's perfect,
das Volks in Calgary is a must do. About the end of July, we have a show on the grass at Stanley Park.
Great venue and great turnout.
I host a soiree the Saturday night before the show at my place with fire pit in the back yard, always a couple guitars, mandolin, etc, lots of refreshments and tolerant neighbours!
Spare beds for out of towners.
Lots of buses too, yours can be the guest of honour in '14.
Edmonton End of Summer is end of August and there's also Lethbridge Street Wheelers weekend. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

Lovely bus and great progress!
My eyes may be playing tricks on me, but your driver-side inner headlight looks to be rotated 90 degrees. |

Hi Keith,
Sounds like a plan! This year for sure as I have no plans for July (for a change!). I'll pack my guitar and sing some tunes.
Yes, I'll have to change over a couple of things to get it correct. It would be cool if I could crank start it. A while back I picked up an apron that was pretty badly hacked. I welded it up and was going to use it for my '59. It would fit on the '56 but not be correct - I should really hunt down a correct crank start apron.
I'm curious what the differences are in the distributors. This one looks to be an original one for the engine; however, the engine came out of a '56 oval. Maybe they are different for a bus? _________________ 1956 pgsg bus
