Ok. Last update for this evening. What I was working on tonight was getting the gearbox connected to the gearstick. Not an easy feat when you have a side shift 5 speed and no one has ever put one in a Baja before that I can find. Time for some pioneer work
As posted previously I have the Weddle linkage fitted to the box which made lift a bit easier. Now all I have to do is connect it to the shiftrod.
Got the gearbox in place, all the lines are working out where to cut and where the linkage will run etc.
Trimmed a little extra metal out of the way.
I am adding a second shift rod bushing as the back of the rod. This is to keep the shift rod straight while uni joins will take the motion around the corner to the side of the box. Here I am cutting out a second 'gearstick hole' which will be used for replacing the rear bushing. I will be making a cover plate up for this. It is all under the backseat area.
All trimmed out and deburred. I am considering making a plate to weld around this opening. Like what you do if you add a clutch access hole at the front. Do you guys think that it is necessary? The normal gearstick hole doesn't have one.
The next step was to trim the shift rod to the correct length and add the splined piece to it so it matches the uni joints. The splines piece was a loose fit once I cut the end of the shift rod off so I cut a slot every 90° in the end and folded the end in slightly so to grabbed tight on the splined piece.
Just tacked together for now to check that is actually works.
And here is the uni jointed piece that I mentioned. This the is steering shaft that connects the rack to the column in a Holden Commodore. And I am happy to report that with a gearstick installed that it seems to work. But because the box isn't bolted to anything it is just getting pushed around at the moment. I will have to try it in the daylight hours with someone holding on to the transaxle for me.
I will get some better pictures of the entire thing not in the tunnel so you can see how it all looks.
That's all for now folks, thanks for reading.

thanks for the indepth info on your tranny mounts. I admire your dedication to documenting this whole process. Whenever I try to document my impatience gets the best of me and I just want to get work done. But look at how helpful your pics are! You are now my fav Samba member! I especially like how you're not afraid of doing things from scratch and 'your way' which can get you a lot of criticism. But you just roll with it.
Your progress on your shift linkage is especially appreciated. I have a 091 side shift but mine comes out of the nose box so it'll end up right beside the frame horn. Most people would swap the nose cone but I want to challenge myself and make something up like the weddle bit or even cables.
keep up the good work that rust would give me nightmares lol _________________ Brian H.

Yes there is great info here, I have learned a lot too. Orangecrusher I too have a nose side shift 091 that I am going to be putting in a future Baja Bug project and will build something like the weddle and will be watching what you do. I have a 002 in my tube frame buggy that was no problem but of coarse it has a nose shifter.
Thanks to all that post and inspire the rest of us.

that's funny because I was going to joke about it coming from a Commodore but I didn't want to sound too sarcastic. Little did I know I forgot I read that already. thanks
Does a Commodore compare to any American vehicles. I know they share some things with some GM cars... _________________ Brian H.

I'm not sure what Gm cars they are similar too. As I am not very well versed in the GM cars of America. Perhaps this will help.

That is specifically the model of car that my shaft came out of, but they are also the same in the VP, VR and VS Commodores too.
I'm sure that you could probably go to your local wreckers and find a suitable part anyway. I used this one because we have one sitting in the backyard half stripped.

Hey everyone, time for today's progress report.
I started fabricating the rear transaxle mounts today.
First off here is a picture of the mounts that I was running on the old 5-rib box. These are front suspension bushes from a Ford Falcon. Now the new setup that I have built is the same but different cause I am using different mounts and the bellhousing is a slightly different shape on the 5 speed.
So we start with something that looks a little like this.
Drill a few holes and had to clearance the rib a little bit too. Then start making the plates up in cardboard templates.
And then make some real ones.
Then weld these together.
The other side is pretty much the same but is a little shorter on one side due to the shape of the bellhousing.
Drill some holes in the plate and this is where the mount bolts on. The mounts that I have here are Toyota Camry engine mounts. I wanted something bigger than what I had but softer so that hopefully some noise is taken out of the car.
And then I put the transaxle back in place on the floorpan and assembled the shifter setup on top of the tunnel so you can get a better look at it.
That's all for today. Hoping to get a bit more done tomorrow.

I know I'm prolly not seeing it in the pics but would it have been much worse running that lot through the tunnel?
I was also going to use mounts similar to those. Seems like they'd save some fabrication time. Mine are about the same but have studs.

I'm liking your brackets. Is that 6mm thick plate? (1/4"? tried to convert lol) |
Pretty sure he has it set up to run in the tunnel. He had it out to take pictures of it if im not mistaken. |

Yeah, the plate is 6mm, I was going to use 5mm but it turns out that the 6mm is all I had left lying around. It is the same plate I used for the front shock towers.
Those mounts look the go. My dad works at Repco (you probably don't have them in America, they are the largest auto parts supplier in OZ) so I basically went out the back to their engine mount section and found something that I liked.
And yes, the shifter will be run through the tunnel. I just set it up outside so I could take a pretty picture to show you all. Space is at a premium in the car when it's loaded with camping gear, so in the tunnel is good.

Are you still planning on pushing this monster around with the stock 1600? |

Hahahahah. It will be a little bit heavier. But not much. pretty much all of the mass that I am adding is very low so that's a plus at least.
the engine I presently have is a 2054 Type 1 with big valve ported heads, a Scat C20 cam and twin Kadrons. It's a nice little torquey combo that has performed well over the last few years.
Once the car is back up and running the next order of the day that I will be saving for is a new engine. Will be going bigger and better.

Unfortunately not much new at all.
I have started a new job in the last month so have been busy tied up with that. Hoping to get some progress in soon, but I am working all of next week too. And still have to do Christmas shopping. But will try and find some time.
