I've got my interior out so now is the ideal time to fix broken cup holders.......
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

They are Pop Riveted on and the rivet needs to be drilled out. No problem EXCEPT the factory put washers on the back to spread the load of the holder with a cup......
Backside........
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So any replacement cup holder installed without backer washer (the vast majority if I hazard a guess) will be a much weaker cup holder..... Crying or Very sad

Hmmmmm..........

Ok, idea! Idea

Drill out the cup holder rivets,
Cut a piece of wood, i used 3/4" thick plywood, to a 3 1/2" square....
Sand the back of the plastic wall panel,
Mark the screw holes on the wood and predrill,
Using my now favorite adhesive Gorilla Glue,
wet the wood,
Smear some Glue on,
Screw the cup holder onto the plastic pulling the wood tight against the plastic.
Now the new cup holder is installed and easily replaced in the future,
The weight is widely distributed as well.

I did this to all three holders, even the old ones not yet broken, easy to replace when they finally do.

Back side clean and sanded..... (The black mark is to orient top for screw hole alignment) ........
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Wood predrilled and smeared with glue..... Leave space around the screw holes so the glue doesn't ooze through the plastic panel!!!
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

New cupholder screwed in place.....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Backside of the side panel showing the glue curing, this wood is attached to the plastic panel for eternity now!

You know, it's all in my head but having fixed that last rusty spot And nearing completion of having scrubbed every nook and cranny clean as well as having brand new seat covers on the lower level.......... I feel really good about this van, a newness to it if you will!

I am excited and I HAVE NOT YET DRIVEN IT EVEN ONE LOUSY FOOT!!!!!! Wink

But...... If it is as fun to drive as my buddies white 87....... I'll be happy...... Very Very happy. Very Happy

I am hoping that next Summer as I motor Westward across the Great Prairies to visit my Daughter in Montana, then on to friends in Idaho, then to friends and family scattered throughout Oregon and finally ending up at my Brother's in Crescent City...... All this work will have been totally worth it!

Reassembly has begun!!!
Oh HAPPY DAY!!!!!

I ran some power wires you see hanging out of the washer fill hole (no more washer assembly, rust my Van away once and you are GONE!)

The pink thing is a foam Kiefer swim float that I use for protecting my knees when I kneel on Asphalt or Concrete.

Still some power ports to hook up but I'm feeling real good! Smile

A ton of great work so far! Question about the cup holder: why not just use pop rivets and backing washers for the new one? It might be tricky to do in the blind but you have access to both sides of the panel. Is that to make swap-out easier? Apologies if I'm missing something obvious here.

Can't wait to see her all done!

When the plastic side panel is installed in the Van, the ENTIRE interior including the floor must be removed to gain access behind the side panels.
By installing the Wood backing block, it is three screws off and three screws on and done!
You cannot easily gain access access to the rear of the side panels while the seats/ floor is in.

I'm very excited to see the progress you're making. I anticipate reading your latest post and seeing your latest pictures with the same excitement I get when looking forward to my favorite TV show.

Keep up the good work.

Too much time to think ....... Ended up staying awake Early Friday Morning after spending almost an hour placing a simple on line order with apple.com for my wife's new 6plus........ Heavy sigh........ (NOT Apples finest hours!)

Anyway.........
I've got to stop the never ending onslaught of fresh air ramming into the Heater Box!

A link to my thoughts....... And hopefully my solution!

Rebuilt my Front Heater Blower Motor!
Put on the end bearing dust cap as well! A Stihl BR600 Fuel Priming Bulb!

Tested, all three speeds function perfectly! Laughing

The bearing at the fan end was compketely locked onto the mototr shaft! It took some convincing for it to come loose.

Well,

I read about it.....

I thought about it.......

I pondered it......

I ran Hot and Cold about it........

But in the end I decided to join the ranks of those who opted NOT to reinstall the Front Heater Core Baffle!

I thought since I'm decreasing the Fresh air flow by over half, lets have all the free flow through the core that I can get.

Well,
In pursuit of a good Dash / Trim color Brown..........

It took me spending more money on buying cans of Brown paint than I care to add up, $$$
But..........

I think I finally nailed it!

This Brown perfectly matches the Fuse Cover Brown which was my Holy Grail of the myriad of Browns which make up these dash assemblies.

I have it shown with....... Clockwise from the left.....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Dash Pad which I recently covered with the Cordovan Brown Vinyl.....

The Fuse Box Cover.......

A Steering column cover bit.......

A Dash Side fresh air vent.....

And the piece of wood that I painted to see how I did.

What is the color you may ask?

I don't know...... I mixed it myself!
Here are my components.........

1) PPG Delfleet Essentials ....... Brown........

2) PPG Red Pigment.........
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

3) Formula ......
12 parts of the Brown
1 part of the Red Pigment
Add hardener and thinner to the above mix on a 6:1:1 basis.
Mixed well

4) When dry It was too glossy so I gave it a shot of Matte Clear......

So, as I mentioned I removed the rear window washer bottle because of the rust it created and I did NOT want a repeat performance of the same!

What to do with the hole?..........
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I could ignore it...... But you know grandchildren would drop crap down in it never to be seen again!

I could duct tape over it or behind it...... Tacky!

I could screw a piece of wood over it and call it "art"....... Even More tacky!

I could fashion a nice looking piece of ABS and glue it behind it...... Better ...... but what a waste of space!

Or........
At night you need somewhere to put your wallet, your keys, your glasses, your phone, whatever while you sleep.
Wouldn't it be great to have a little cubby to put that stuff into?

I tried many different cubby boxes, none fit or looked good.......

Then I spied these little Stainless Steel Bowls I picked up, forgotten at a catered event here........ Hmmmmmm

Messed around, test fitted........ It works, not huge but if I made the access hole bigger and ended up with a half moon storage area........ Long things could stick out of the top.......

Bowl, marked plastic, saw.........
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Hole is cut, filed, sanded and burnished smooth with a green Scotch Pad.....
BTW....... Interior plastic composition is ABS........
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I again used Gorilla Glue, it has proven itself, to attach the Bowl to the ABS.....
Weighted down with a hammer while it dries.......
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I didn't want TK to think that I was taking the easy way out here and just putting an unmodified piece back on the Van! Wink

Well, the night stuff cubby is complete and looks good!.......
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

While reinstalling the interior I'm adding power ports at each cup holder area.
I'm using basic cigarette lighters to provide the power.....

Because the lighters are mounted in ABS Plastic, they will melt the plastic if allowed to get too hot...... Such as a child holding in the lighter after it gets hot......
To prevent this, i've "neutered" the element, by ripping out the heat coil! Smile .....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here is the Right Rear interior Weekender panel installed with the new "Night time cubby" and a new power port next to the cup holder......... It's not very deep, I'll keep on the lookout for an alternate "bowl" though the concept is sound as it is for small items......
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The interior panels have cleaned up great! Except for some sun fading, they are like new. Smile

Adding wires for immediate and future upgrades.

Immediate, 110v for a trickle charger located under the RF Seat.
Also additional powe ports by each cup holder in the Weekender.
Future, 110v under the jump seat,
Power feed line to remove interior lights from Starter battery,
Additional 12v lines for yet to be determined needs.

FYI all sharp edges have been protected and no wires will be pinched under the wood subfloor or walked upon under carpet.

Whew!

How hard can. It be to install a simple interior panel?

Well considering that I added two 12v power ports on either side of the table, multiple 12 volt feed and ground wires traveli g fore and aft for current and future unknown electrical needs, a 110v outlet under the RF seat, a 12v wire to the fuse panel to remove the factory interior lights off of the starting battery, new rear speaker wires, a 110v wire feeding an outlet under the jump seat and 12v up the drivers "B" Pillar to power a fan that is to be mounted there........
It takes Days!

Anyway...... Finally in!

Since the dash is out and I've formulated the proper "Vanagon Brown" I figure why not repaint it?

Sadly the PO has inflicted a few woes upon it, scratches, duct taped fresh air vents in, etc.

It's a sorry looking dash right now so a good scrubbing with a scrub brush and simple green followed by simple Green with a Green Scotch Brite pad should prepare the surface.

Let it dry well, wipe it well with silicone/wax remover and shoot it with the color coat........

As long as I'm painting the dash I figure tgat the various plastic vents need a facelift due to them being all dry and chaulky looking.

One side dash vent was broken so I glued that back together with the ABS glue.

I sanded / wire brushed tge plastic and then sprayed it with "Bulldog Adhesion Promoter" that I had picked up at my auto paint store...... Can't hurt right? Rolling Eyes

Any way, I almost tempted to stop with just this product! It made the plastic uniform in color and looking almost new! ........

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Not the best photo but you can see the above vents still in the dash, white and sickly looking........

Very pleased!

Painted my dash with my Home Brew Brown, here ii is nearly dry.......

Trouble is, WAY TOO SHINY!!!!
Looks like a home brew crap job.
Here is a view highlighting the shine, completely dry.....

To take away the shine I clear coated it with Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Matte Clear,

I was able to reuse the plywood floor subfloor.
As a matter of fact I simply scrubbed the old floor really well and then sanded it with 80 grit creating a porous surface for the vinyl floor glue to adhere to.

Yes, I opted for Vinyl, cheap easy to install, easy to clean and keep clean.
For what? Two / Three weeks a year, no fancy high dollar flooring is needed!
$30 Vinyl remnant, glue I had on hand........

Floor with adhesive applied, drying awaiting new vinyl.......
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I cut the new vinyl long enough to go under the bench/bed seat and to the firewall to provide a clean floor and to catch any leaks before they go under the subfloor........ Obviously the back isn't glued or trimmed to fit yet......
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And the jump seat is ScotchGard "fabric protected", reassembled and installed! Smile I also sprayed the rear seat cushions as well with the ScotchGard.

I do need to make a new rack side for the jump seat, the PO must have used it as a step more than once! Shocked

Planning ahead, the Jump seat is now wired for the installation of a 110v AC outlet inside.
For What? Fan? Air Conditioner? Heater? Battery Charger? TV? Who knows???
The side wall was open and now was the time to run wires just for the heck of it!
