SQUIRREL !!!! Shocked

Actually I've been pondering,

I came up against an obstacle and subsequent discouragement when I realized my operating lever concept cannot work as I envisioned.

I've been running ideas and I think I have it easily solved...... Now to just go out and do it but I need some supplies, most notably a throttle cable that twist locks at any point in its travel.

The Rear Fresh Air lever will operate the new outside air door.

The rear fresh air will be operated by a new push/pull control cable.

So, I've been cleaning wheels finding that Oven Cleaner seems to bethe clear cut winner thus far.

I've also been struggling on the front wheel covers which have decades of brake dust baked onto them that is as tough as a layer of paint!

It laughs at wheel cleaners, it gives slightly to Oven Cleaner and a stiff brush, i soaked it in a tub of soapy hot water over night with only minor loosening, so I tried Muriatic Acid with a level of fear, for the plastic.

I must say that brake dust gave it up within seconds of the acid's application!
I brushed it on, aggitated it with the brush and hosed it off.... GONE!
The right side slots have been done with the Muriatic acid......
(The stains and blotchy paint, that's all highway damage)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The acid did not harm the painted wheel cover at all but.....

It did have a minor appetite for the raw plastic! (You can see the damage line right under the word Muriatic)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

A double edged sword....... Brake dust gone, raw plastic slightly marred........

I'm painting the wheel covers with Single Stage Audi Silver automotive paint so I'll just paint everything?

While the dash is out it is the ideal time to rehab the wiper assembly.

Remove it, clean up the pivots, lubricate the pivots and reassemble.

I'm on the fence about relubing the wiper motor, they always seem to come back and bite me somehow!

And on second thought..........

Considering that the wiper motor and gear box are riveted together, I'm thinking that I'll just clean up the pivots and put it back in.

It can "easily" be removed with the dash installed if need be.

I pulled the wipers to clean and lubricate the mechanism.

I will put in new body seals and also new Washer Nozzles and seals to the body.

Hey Dave, have you considered the dual-spout nozzles? I hear they're swell, and Chris at T3 sells them (although I think same ones are cheaper elsewhere, like Pellican Parts).

Any issues getting your nozzles detached from hoze, in terms of brittleness, etc.?

These Wheel Covers have seen some serious road rash!
Chipped, Scratched, Gouged and seriously Stained/Discolored.

All four wheel covers have been cleaned and scrubbed with Muriatic acid,
Sanded,
Sprayed with plastic adhesion Promoter,
Primed with Epoxy Primer.

Tomorrow they get Sprayed Audi LX7W "Cool Silver".

I know, they are antiquated, ugly, small...... But they ARE VW in 1986.

The wheels and covers look great! I'd love to do this to mine. They have some serious road rash too.

Thanks!
I must admit that I keep touching them and caresing their glassy smoothness whenever I'm in the garage! Embarassed

I'm also shocked that these wheels and wheel covers have sucked up an amazing quantity of hours! They've both been a major PITA to properly clean, sand and prep for paint!
Sadly, I still have three more wheels to do! I only had two tires removed for I desired to keep at least two wheels chocked on the ground because it's parked on an incline.
I think my first step on the next three will be Muriatic acid right off the bat.

Considering that the wheels started like this, I'm feeling pretty good!

I stumbled across the multi nozzle ones after I purchased three new single units. They look nice but I'm going to run what I have.

I cut the hoses upon removal. The clear vinyl tubes are hard and firmly attached to each nozzle. I'll be running new hose.

Call me a car geek or whatever but there is a simple beauty in clean wheels with new tires on them!
Of course that beauty cost $$'s!

Not all of the road rash is gone, some of it was way too deep and honestly, not worth filling back to perfection.........
Note depressions by the "Spoke".....
Also, painting in Windy October introduces some dust into fresh paint! Embarassed

Wheel cover on..... A vast improvement!

This piece was on my Van and I am quite certain that it was "factory" probably Westfalia factory I imagine.

For reference if you shop.... 1986 Vanagon Wolfsburg Multivan "weekender" with the storage cabinet in the left rear and pop up top.

I cleaned and repainted the threshold while it was off as well as the worn floor paint under it. Seems that sand and dirt worked their way under it and did a number to the paint over a 28 year time period!

Still some work to do but figured while the dash was out and I had access to the back side that I'd work it mostly out. I'll deal with the slight details later.

Somehow I missed your question!
I did not replace any foam, made some repairs to the front seat bottoms and switched the left seat foam to the right to equalize future wear.

I did depend upon Frebreeze and the Sun to neutralize residual odors.

My front seats as I purchased it and my color choices. I chose "Earth" and "Van Tan Vinyl"
For some reason the Earth photographs much more Pink than it actually is....???

If I had a "Do Over" card, I'd opt for more color, too Beige! I would probably choose the "Flannel" fabric with the Van Tan Vinyl. d'oh!
