I'm building a shelf behind the passenger seat.
I want it to look like it belongs hence it should be Westfalia Beige.
Done properly, I'd source some Formica/Wilson laminate.

I'm not sure if it going to be permanent or if I'll even like it when complete so I'm just going to make it out of Birch Plywood and paint it to blend.

I took the small door to Home Depot and had it color computer matched.

I chose "Eggshell" to mimic the sheen and here is the result.

I painted a piece of cardboard as a color test......
Pretty darn good!
Color varies due to photography light conditions but consistently matches.......

This one with full late afternoon sun you need to study the photo to pick out the paint chip!

As I work on this "Weekender" Van I'm finding that my ideals are changing.

I'm moving away from a "kitdhen" unit behind the passenger seat as I originally planned and towards a storage shelf concept.

I'm also seeing that interior storage space is really at a premium. Items that I thought would store inside, obviously won't for there is no space.

The BusDepot Canopy, screening for the canopy, rear lid tent, extra propane, site marking tent, etc have been booted!

I've determined to use the front luggage rack over the front seats.
I do not however want soaking wet items so "Dry Bags" would be ideal.

I found these on Sierra Trading Post and I Ordered five of them, two Extra Large, one large and two Medium bags.

The Extra large fit the Canopy and Poles. The small, ones fit eight (Cool One Pound bottles and the small tents.

All in all, I'm very pleased with these bags......... Seattle Sport Hydro Bags.

I can fit the mediums forward tomback, the extra larges side to side.

Wheewww! Just finshed reading this thread, awesome! Thanks for the detailed pics and write ups. I'm curious as to how the seams are holding up, anymore rust showing its ugly mug?

Also, your dog kind of looks like Nick Nolte. Razz

For sure!
We even have what we call "oatmeal" carpet in our home! Hides the copious quantites of shed fur!

Love the breed..... Hate the shedding!

I've sealed the exterior and all of the accessible interior sides of the body seams. It is thus far holding up well.

Time will be the ultimate judge though...........

Ordered some new front Seat Belts this morning.

The ones in the unit are dirty and showing signs of wear.
Plus PO's smoked and they have minor burns in them....
Add to that the fact that the webbing and stitching are 30 years old.........

Better safe than sorry!

I also got two sets of EyeBolts with them to replace the factory bolts. That way I can fasten things down and prevent flying debris in case I need to actually use the new seat belts!

I used this company for my Super Beetle Belts...... Quality product, and a quality company.

I purchased the 140" belts with the 9" Cable end button latch.
Stock is 108" and a 10" end latch on a steel plate.

Dave -
I did the eyebolt "upgrade"as well.
I'm looking to upgrade my OEM rear lap belts to shoulder belts. Do you think seltbeltplanet would be a viable supplier vs. the standard vendors? (My DW likes the color options!)
Keep fighting the good fight!

Been gathering AC parts and figuring out how it is wired.
No small task I assure you!
No wiring diagram for the Early 86 Vanagons exists on the Internet that I've located. Ends up it is quite different from the 84/85 and the Late 86 even! A hybrid of both during development of the late 86 design and the units being in production.
I wonder if it was a "get rid of these old style parts!" Kind of a system?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=622529

I Plan on installing at least a Binary saftey switch in the system, something the factory did not do.

Thread on updating Early 1986 AC Systems with modern components......

how would you like to list the wiring differences you found to help out the other unfortunates with an early '86 (some of whom even labor along thru life with ugly body colors too...)

Well.......

This is how MY 1986 Multivan Wolfsburg is wired with "factory" AC including the 3rd Stage High Speed Fan.

Still to come is the Radiator cooling fan wiring and then the wiring to add a Binary (High/Low Pressure combination) Switch.

Well finally back at practical work!

Too much delay for way too long!

It's warm, Spring has Sprung and it's time to get off my duff and finish this vehicle.

I had installed the heater box awhile ago and then dhaavers went and posted a heater resistor modification that I really wanted to do. I modified my air box and concerned about cooling air flow over the factory resistor.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=623382&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Got the resistor in, and I had forgotten to reinstall the wiper linkage before installing the air box so it was just as well, I had to pull it anyway.

While I had it out, i treated the rust in the air box seams that I ignored during the cool months. I use Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer for stuff like this. No sense color coating it, no one will see it! Water must sit in that seam and eventually rusts........ (Brown is the Rustoleum)

Here is my air box installed. The white PVC is a check valve for cabin air recirculation.

My wife is a Menopausal North Eastern Female.
AIR CIRCULATION IS IMPORTANT!!!!
(You'll find out someday)

Not only circulation but temperature as well. Hot is NOT a good thing.

With the AC in the rear I want to be able to enhance moving it around.
By being able to close the Ram Air and blow somewhat cool air out of the dash vents is vitally important.

I will not be surprised if a dash AC system is not in my future! Shocked
