Yeap, DL wrote me and said the same thing, out of a 67. Previous owner must have swapped that for 12V? Gonna try to go back to correct one.
On the trim, it is all drilled, and the corner bent, but these F'n small ripples are just a pain to get out. Anyone in the Bay Area who can lend a hand? |

Finally got some paint on the bus. Here is how it stands now.
Some parts are also back from powder... will post more on that later.

Going with the stock colors it came with from the factory with. Turkis blue white. If anyone has a paint code for L289 please post it up. The sample I had mixed locally looked more green then blue. |
cool build so for, but what's up with that shiny black paint, is that going to be used a some sort of primer? |

For a non-body guy like me, the bus has looked great for weeks now but the only way to really tell if those loooong panels are straight is to put down a color that shows everything..hence the black paint.
The guys that are doing the paint job suggested it and with all the work going into it I figured a couple of hundred bucks would be worth it and indeed now I see stuff that I could not with the flat gray.
Real paint in the next couple of weeks I hope
BTW: Anyone looking for a paint shop in Bay Area, I have a place for you. Honest people, honest work and they work on all types of classics, fords, chevys, datsuns, and a mini or two...here is the cheaper $1500 paint job they did on a Mini for me. This included plugging up several holes where old license plate bracket went, a roof mounted radio antenna hole and more.
Single Stage paint

Time to refurb the gas tank. After sanding a bit, found what looked to be the original color of the tank, a darker gray color that I found an almost exact match for at my local Napa auto parts.

Had the tank cleaned and resealed at a local radiator shop. Coating on the inside is a nice red...easy to see in the fuel filter if any of it comes off. They did have to drill a hole in the corner of the tank to drip the coating out.

Painting starts this week, with the inside first. The turkis l380 had a wide variation of colors, but thanks to 55samba, I received a body panel from him that will help color match it nicely.
All the different sprayout cards I collected:
The one that closely matched.

Received my bumpers and wheels back from powder, assembled the bumpers which took some time to clean out the threads for the screws and mount the trim and rubber. Came out ok I think.
I used the Lowes paint mixer stick for the rubber trim, worked out nicely.

Thanks. The rubber inserts took a bit of work to get into the trim , I unfortunately could not find the jar of vaseline or baby oil to lube it up. |

You can also soak them in some super hot water, makes them very bendy. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

Finally some real paint...L289 in single stage paint on the inside. Outside next, with 2 stage paint using the same tint of the L289 single stage.

Never noticed that but from what I learned 1963 was a change over year mid year. My bus was built April 5 1963, came with the short middle seat and yes does have M code 082.
Since we started the restoration no part of the floors were replaced by us, other then the outer sill panel and from looking at old photos, the floors look original and untouched.

Yes, there were some changes done mid-year, for instance the engine vents changed to inward-facing vents and a lot of the mid-63-up Deluxe Buses are 1500cc / 1-ton rear end / later brake equipped.
My late '63 has the same dual set of seat mounts, even though it's a short middle seat too. _________________ How to Post Photos

Finally got the bus painted over the holiday's. Surprisingly the paint laid down really flat with all the blocking that was done but they still hit all body with 1500 grit dry sandpaper. I was nervous with 1500 grit, let alone that it was dry, but I guess they knew what they were doing as the paint is mirror clear.
Fingers crossed I don't chip things up during assembly. |

some progress photos:
next day, top half tapped off for the Turkis.
Luckily, I told them I want to see the bus before any paint was laid down to the bottom half and good thing I did, because if you look closely at this photo, you can see how the front door jam was incorrectly masked. They got the upright correct, but the seat part, they came too far out.
