|

Hello, there . . . . this is Pest, again . . . .
I'm trying to reconnect an old Panasonic cassette/stereo back into my 74. Have it all connected right, but I'm getting a humming or buzzing noise through it. Even with the motor off.
Maybe a ground issue? Is there a "best practices" diagram somewhere that shows the most efficient way to wire a stereo?
Where's the best place to ground it? What about grounding the speakers? Best place to get power, and constant power to maintain the memory?
Tell me what you think, or how you did it, please . . . . . |

Yeah, could be a ground problem.
Or could be an old radio or speaker problem. Do you know when they last worked?
I run an old Alpine with a tapedeck, old radios are fine; but, you know, stuff wears out
Any clean connection to the body is an acceptable ground.
There's a few mounting bolts near the radio, can use about any of those.
The previous owner on my bug drilled some extra holes in the trunk area; I chose one close to the radio, sanded the edges clean, and bolted down a ring terminal on the radio's ground wire.
Speakers just need their two wires from the radio, no special grounding concerns.
Power wise, given its not too heavy a system, you can use the old radio power connection if you want.
I ran a separate power wire off the voltage regulator up to a relay powered by the keyswitch. My bug still has it's original wiring, didn't want to stress it.
I did use the 'constant power' connection on the fuseblock for the radio memory though.
Power (constant and switched), ground, speakers, and the antenna wire are about it. |

would it help to run power straight from the battery? Bypass all the car stuff? |

Sure.
The power wire on mine effectively is, it's on the 'output' side of the voltage reg where both the wire to the battery and the wire to the front attach.
