The Commonwealth of Virginia is very strict about running a tag up front as with the back. I could mount it over or under the tag if I chose to though. _________________ Brianna's Grandpa |

I text the transport driver yesterday and told him, "If you feel like taking a pic of my car on your rig and sending it to me I surly won't stop you." This is what I got back. Not the greatest pics but I do appreciate it.
I should be getting the car either tonight or tomorrow. _________________ Brianna's Grandpa |

While searching through the car I found this photograph. No date, place or time but I thought this had to be sometime in the late 1950's or early 1960's. Maybe some of you can give me your thoughts.

Hmmm, I don't think it's the same car, while it's hard to tell if those Semaphore's are ribbed and riveted, I think the car in the photo is a pre 1950 Standard.........while your car *new* had pinstriping down the side!

So once it was unloaded I drove it around the vacant dead end street to get use to it. Had a ball. Really fun. I discovered the emergency brake does stop the car even though the cable brake system is not working, but I decided not to go crazy. I had my daughter follow behind me to take it to my storage unit where it will be stored for now. Made it safe and sound. So next order of business is to do a mechanical inspection to see where we stand. I am better at the mechanical end of things than cosmetic. I will leave the body work up to the professionals. I gotta do some research on cable brakes first. I have already located a source for the cables. Again I am very pleased with this car. _________________ Brianna's Grandpa |

On a standard I understand that there is no cover plate painted or otherwise on the passenger side. Question, are these holes suppose to be there?

I'd say "no" . Seems that someone put an oval horn grille without making the whole hole, but only the four small ones. On a standard model you should have only one grille on the left where there is the horn under. So it would be correct to close those four little holes , but maybe its better to close the others bigger on the decklid before _________________ Italian 1964 "ruby red cocaine bug"

Here's your answer.........on a correctly restored 1954 German Standard.
Nope not supposed to be there, not even a painted "blanko" grille, that fender you have on the car now is from a Deluxe car, thus the holes already there......if these are early fenders you need to weld/close those holes up as I see you have to close holes in the front apron too, not a big deal.
I'm still researching different styles and colors of paints used on Standard's, as you can see on some of the Grey cars, they had bumpers painted in an luminescent hammer-tone paint etc. (a story for another day/thread)

No offense to the previous poster, but I am pretty sure that a quick search in the oval parts classifieds under "fender" will reveal that a deluxe fender has an oval opening, not just 4 little holes to allow a horn grill to be attached. Your fender seems to be a slightly modified and easily repaired og standard fender. Enjoy... |

Hmmm ok, well you learn something new here everyday....... I never bothered looking behind my passenger side fender to see if it's cut out or just got holes, maybe that's a non German fender? , I can't understand why someone would go to all that trouble to cut holes in a fender to put in a fake horn grille? Well, with Volkswagen you can never be certain what your going to see next......it's not just the medication I'm taking, LOL!!!!!!!
It's an easy fix though, just close some holes, Steve don't forget to look for those wire pipes underneath, I have never been able to tell just by looking at a fender, I always had to look underneath etc. to tell it's age.
Ohh send me your phone number, ok I didn't get it last time we talked and batten down the hatches, hope that Sandy won't do any bad damage where you are!

Ok found out from the PO that this not my car. The picture was sent with some parts that he received from Europe. The picture is of a split era car. _________________ Brianna's Grandpa |
