I saw this at the SEMA convention today. It was done in steel and the work was nicely done.
This was already posted in the abortions thread, but what do you think? _________________ September 1964 Standard Sunroof walk through SWR/BG original paint. |

That is sweet. You know a car is beautiful when someone sacrifices a Porsche for it... |

So is that a Boxster with Ghia panels on the outside? If it is they've kept the proportions very well I like it |

I like it. theres alot of realestate in the dash area and it works.
I'd also like to see the power plant.

Very nice work there. I really appreciate it when someone can do a "marriage" such as this and still keep the essence of both cars so well represented. I am also partial to the graft of the '60's taillights onto the '72 body, as those taillights scream "Classic Ghia" to me. Creations like this usually don't hold a lot of appeal for me, but I'd drive this and enjoy the hell out of it. _________________ Mike

I like it alot! I would swap out the factory wheel for a classic wood Nardi steering wheel , some moders "smoothie" wheels instead of the mesh wheels and put some front turn signals on it. Otherwise it look great and like alot of fun! |

I rather have a Karmann-Ghia and a Boxster, and never have to explain why I have ruined a Karmann-Ghia by making it into a Boxster, or ruined a Boxster by turning it into a Karmann-Ghia...
Looks like nice craftsmanship, though not my cup o' tea. _________________ David Ruby

Just got back from Sema today and also seen this car. Went over the car for about 15 minutes. Let me say the car is amazing. It was done very well. Big fan of this car. |

...would drive it, wouldn't buy it....
the craftmanship is nice (takes a lot of measuring to fit that together convincingly), and it's a one of a kind, just like the famous "race taxi" split bus (split bus on T3 bus chassis with Porsche 993 Turbo drivetrain, see http://karakullake.blogspot.nl/2008/10/swiss-race-taxi-porsche-993-turbo.html)
The red Ghia-Boxter reminds me of another insanely fast Ghia project : the Bader Ghia:
http://www.bader-racing.de/de/home/home_aktuelles.htm
But the one question remains.......whywhywhy???? because they can.....
Now THERE are 3 cars I would love to see racing against each other on the Nürburgring in Germany; let's see who makes it through the Nordschleife first!
(i'd put my money on the split bus) _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank
you don't have to be crazy to be into VW's, but it sure helps!!

From my perspective vintage VW's are beyond being used for daily driver purposes. It would be best to have your car parked in a garage, and kept away from the elements on a daily basis. Zack |

You would likely be very surprised if you opened that Karmann Ghia's engine lid looking for the power plant.
The Boxster is a mid engine car, and as such had a trunk in both the front and back (similar to a Type III)
Unlike a Type III, however, the engine is not accessed through the rear trunk - rather, it is accessed through a removable panel that is found inside the well that the convertible top folds down into.
If you wanted to see the engine, you'd have to start with the roof in the closed position, and then start to open it just enough so that the boot panel is up as far as it goes and out of the way.
You then release a small cable found on each side of the base of the convertible top which would allow you to manually fold the rear-most portion of the top up and forward.
This exposes the carpet pad that you would need to remove in order to finally see the metal lid that covers the top of the engine.
... or you can also access the front of the engine by removing the carpet and access cover that reside behind the seats.
If you look closely behind the passenger's seat, you can see the convertible top all folded up underneath the metal boot panel.
This is what a Boxster engine compartment looks like when opened:

That is nice claustrophobic engine compartment! I bet that every procedure in engine compartment listed in Boxster repair manual starts with:
"1. Remove engine from the car;
2. ..........
157. Replace spark plugs and refit engine into the car." _________________ The glory never gets old, just need new paint.

I've replaced the oil/air separator (a sort of fancy and pricey EGR valve), the alternator (which is actually the same as the one in a New Beetle) and the water pump so far, and it's really not too bad to work on.
I have not yet tried to replace the spark plugs though. |
