So I bought a 71 Super. Didn't really mean to, but it was way too good of a deal to pass up.

It has a 1500 H case in it now. It's going to go.

This is the start of the AH that's going in it.

All stripped and clean. Considering splitting the case but haven't decided yet.

Piecing things together. I'm blasting the cheap chrome off and adding flaps and a tstat to the Chinese shroud.

Going to powder coat the engine orange with silver vein accents.

Also planning on putting discs on it. The car is extremely solid and thanks to my 67, I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert on where Beetles rust. The only rust I can find on the hole car is a 2" hole behind the battery.

Solid yet dirty floors

The car has been parked since the 80s.. Like 84. Really looking forward to making it nice and enjoying it. I pick it up Sunday.

Sean, this is the place that Cook sent me to. When you're ready, check it out. Good luck on the new project.

Went and got it today. Played with it a little.

Cleaned a small spot. It matches the powder I bought for the engine pretty closely.

Quickly sprayed the decklid with some paint my friend had lying around.

We played with the engine a little, and with some starting fluid, I actually had in running for a second.

It needs a little more work then I thought, but I'll get it. Turns out the single port 1500 that is in it was made the same month as my 67. Dec of 66. Seriously considering putting it in my 67.

Also, thought this was pretty cool.

The VW logos on the knobs are neat.

Well, I'm off all week. Had some vacation to burn. So, today I took a trip to a junkyard a friend told me about. Several air cooled VWs. 5 or 6 Ghias, 7 or 8 Bugs, and a few bay windows. Nothing to write home about, but perfect if you need a hood for your 71 Super.

Found one. It was buried a little.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

My wife didn't think I'd be able to get it out.

Plenty of surface rust. A small ding or two, but much nicer then the one on the car.

Even got some Ghia Parts. This is the rear bumper center towel bar. Got the 2 pieces of trim that sit on top of the door and hold the window scraper too.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

All for $75. Pretty damn good deal for all those parts. The center towel bar alone sells for more then that.

Last night my friend Mark and I played with it and actually got the h case to run briefly, although it was running on starter fluid. Formulating a plan on where to start on it. It needs every single brake component, so i think I'll just do a disc swap now, rather then later. Also need to send the case of the engine I'm building off to be machined. So far though, I'm still having fun. Smile

Well, I worked non stop on my wife's Thing all week so I got nothing done on the Bug except powder coating a backing plate to see what silver vein looks like.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It's a 2 stage. Silver vein, then clear. I like it a lot.

Got a set of them yesterday. Also got a front passenger fender. Ordered a full set of Cal Look rubber. I still need a drivers front fender and I might try and find the correct decklid. I've sent an email to a guy in Ohio advertising an apron in the classifieds 3 times now and no response. I was really trying to get a deal and not have to spend $80 on one.

It's coming together though. Just gathering up parts, then I'll start really tearing into it.

Did some powder coating for the Super. Did the wiper arms, headlight rings, and rear portion of the backing plate. Doing all the chrome parts in silver vein.

Well, because I don't want it to rust and the window seals are leaking, I started replacing them.

I really think Cal Look seals look nice on late cars. I like the trim on earlier cars, but on late cars it cleans the lines up a lot.

Still saving up for that disc brake kit. Also scrounging money together for an engine build. I'm seriously considering this engine:

Well, the brakes have set me back a bit, but I put the new wheels on to make it less ugly.

That isn't the engine that's going in it, but that is the tin. Looking really cool I think. I decided against the 36 horse shroud. It didn't fit right. Ordered a ton of parts for it that should be here very soon. Front disc brakes, complete new rear brakes, new hoses, new metal lines, an alternator, lowering struts, the correct lugs and a few other odds and ends. Trying to have it running by March. Not sure I'll have the money or time but trying anyway.

Ok, so the dash in the car is really ugly. Started fixing that:

Some idiot had put vinyl on the glove box door.

Removed it, blasted it clean, and powder coated it orange. Also bleached the lock knob clean.

I'm going to do the dash vents in the same color.

Brake work begins very shortly when all the parts arrive.

In the mean time, I got a new backing plate and powder coated it:

I need to get some photos together myself. I am primed and almost painted but still need the motor rebuilt. It runs but leaks like a siv...
