Once the trans is out it's getting cleaned and I'm going to paint it. Leaning towards orange but not sure yet. Also need to replace the final drive seals, and I'm going to powder coat the cv flanges.

Damn. it was 45 C over here last week, only escape was in the pool consuming copious beverages of a spirituous nature. since the trans is out (nice cleanup job btw) have you considered having it freshened up? new starter bushing, drop in a LSD, weld some more material back onto the hockeystick selector... tighten her up? Just saying, you know. It's out. Might as well. Very Happy

My vote goes for the silver vein powdercoat if it's possible, I reckon that would look sweeeeeeeeeeet.

I actually was going to do some of that. The final drive seals, new starter, bushing, and maybe a new nose cone. I'd love to PC it but it would have to be stipped to just the case, and I'm not spending that kind of money on it. I may PC the side plates silver vein though. Going to PC the clutch arm, and might replace the shaft while it's out.

Yep it's probably not going to happen to silver vein the whole thing, but how awesome would it look? I wonder how much you'd need to disassemble to get just the trans case free of sensitive parts. messy job i'll bet.

this is what happens when you wire brush the hell out of it, but it dulls after a few months unless you clear it.

This baby has had the royal treatment including custom Weddles/Albins gears and everything that's not new or custom put back to original spec. plus a Quaife. Smile

it's in the car waiting to be mated to the engine....

that's a good looking box. The thing that stopped me from painting it is pretty much the same thing as you- didn't want to paint over anything that shouldn't have paint on it. This includes nuts and gaskets and covers etc. To do a really schmicko job it should be stripped down to nothing and painted while apart; I hate the look of beetles and parts that have just had colour blown over everything-it looks lazy. Like when you see 'full resprays' with the fender beading painted over and rubbers not quite masked off properly.

But I digress Smile

more pics and more news as it happens please Very Happy

I know what you mean. Nothing worse then paint on rubber. Really annoying. I'm going to partially disassemble it and paint it. Also going to replace all the nuts and bolts with stainless. I buy stainless m8 nuts buy the hundred. The good thing about the trans being out is that I can finish detailing the chassis. Going to paint the forks, and trailing arm pivots, etc. It'll be much easier to paint the bottom of the packge tray now too.

got to love stainless Smile
annoying thing is that it has a sacrificial rusting problem when you put it against ordinary steel, and loctite doesn't work as well on it. Hasn't stopped me from replacing every 2nd nut, bolt and washer with it, however.

Latest progress pics?

No new progress since Sunday. Usually get home from work too late to tackle any major work on it. I do plan on working on it this weekend however. The weather is supposed to suck again, but I'm going to work on it anyway. Might push it into the garage and finish welding the cross members in. Haven't decided yet.

Worked on the Super today.

The bottom is looking much better. However, if you look careful you'll see that I'm going to have to replace the metal fuel line. Going to order a roll of stainless from Jegs.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and get some welding done on the cross members and maybe the floor.

Woohoo! things always look better with a coat of paint (except rubber). If you're buying SS tubing make sure you go up to 8mm ID in case Smile. I ran -8AN braided from front to back 'in case' because I'd rather route bigger plumbing than I absolutely need once and not have to worry about fuel delivery later when I start force feeding the animal. AN fittings also allow a modular approach which makes for easy addition of bits later on. As a tip, putting stainless tubing directly in contact with mild steel will make them both rust, so keep them isolated with mounts if possible.

love build pics. Smile

The painted pics are just the 1st coat. It's not done yet. However, you can clearly see a big improvement.

Started cutting floor patches too.

Not sure I'll be happy with it. May just end up replacing the pans. It'll look much better in the end, and doesn't cost all that much as long as you can do it yourself (which I can).

some of the repro pans are thin and weedy, might be better using donor panels if you can find good solid metal and don't mind the cutting and fitting and cutting and welding and cutting and fitting etc etc. with a bit of effort you can make them look pretty good.
Keep the progress shots coming Smile

I've used the Zito brazilian pans on other projects. They are the ones my parts guy gets. They are decent quality. I'm going to try the cut, weld, grind, cut, weld grind method 1st. If I'm not happy with it, it gets new pans.

Worked on the car some this weekend. It warmed up a little here. Did some welding. Needs a little cleaning up though.

Fitted it:

Painted the area behind it I won't be able to access with it welded in:

Welded it in and made a patch I'm not happy with yet:

Patched the outside:

Progress so far:

I also took the time to chisel off the remaining tarboards inside the car.

Now that it's warm I need to order some seam sealer and seal it and finish masterseries-ing things. I bought this Monday for the new metal fuel line I need to run.

Hopefully I'll start putting it in this weekend.

Yeah, it was full of mouse bedding, acorns, stink bugs, and just plain old dirt. Much better now. I'm going to use the Eastwood inner chassis paint in it.

Won't have any mice in it again anytime soon. Opened it today to find my cat, the mouse killer of my 3, sleeping in it. She got in through the hole in the floor I haven't welded back up yet.
