Looking good. What product are you using to strip the rims to bare metal? Also, what powder coating system are you using? |
Klean strip aircraft stripper. Using an Eastwood Hotcoat gun and an old kitchen oven. Thanks for the feedback. |
Cool. I'll need your address so I can send my parts your way for powder coating. Just kidding. _________________ 1968 Volkswagen Bug w/ 1600 Dual Port

Worked on it some today. Stripped the wheels some more, got one ready to prebake, and couldn't find the rack to my oven. So, I painted it.
Don't like the way it looks. So I'm going to take the paint off and powder coat it like I had planned. As I was standing in my garage I noticed I had some metal laying around. So, I made a rack.
15" wheels fit perfectly. I did manage to powder coat some things. Remember the ugly pitted backing plate from several pages ago? Well last year I bought a used one at a show for $5.
Also did the end casting for the manifold and the sway bar retainers.

Worked on the Super today.
Cleaned and powder coated the axle seal plates
Doesn't show up very well, but the one on the right is the new one because the one on the left is extremely pitted
Cleaned the spring plate threads
Installed the new bearings and seals

Had a productive weekend.
Mounted the passenger side spring plate:
Assembled the trailing arm:
And went to mount it to the pan, only to find that I'd put the drivers side spring plate on the passenger side.
So next weekend I'll mount both on the proper side. I have some more parts on the way. Also have 1 more pound of orange powder coat on the way to do the wheels with.
Got to order the proper bushings too. Somehow got the wrong one 2 years ago when I bought them. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Built a torsion tool and swapped spring plates out today. When I was done with it, I assembled the passenger side.

looking really good! I am around the same stage as you are with my 71 super convertible myself! I just finished mounting the trans up this afternoon, shifter, installed my pedal assembly with new clutch cable and a everything. About to order a new MC and brake lines. Still needing a rear disc kit. Your parts are looking pretty nice! I sandblasted and painted most of my stuff like 7 years ago or so, then the project got put on backburner. I am back on it now and its coming along! Here is a pic, the trans is just sitting there in this pic, it is now mounted, along with the pedal assembly and clutch cable.
and here is what it looked like when i tore it apart in 2008 lol

Looks like yours is coming along nicely. I too am putting disc brakes in. Hopefully I'll get to the point of installing brakes in it this weekend. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Got a lot done on the Super today. Unfortunately, I can't find one of the pins that holds the ebrake assembly to the shoe, so only one side is done.

More parts on the way. Nickel and diming me to death. The missing ebrake pin, the coupler I couldn't find, and the clips that hold the rubber lines in. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

i know what you mean on the nickle and diming lol, I place an order for a hundred bucks or so and I tell my wife, "I think this is gonna get me close to being done with the chassis" well, 4 more orders like that later, I am still ordering crap It is looking good man! I am saving some of your pics for when my brake lines come in this week I can do them right. 7 years since I disassembled the car, mine is at about the same stage as yours. Rear disc kit, MC, and lines coming this week! Keep posting pics I am enjoying this thread and the pictures are helpful!!! _________________ 1971 Super Beetle Convertible Restoration (started in 2010) |

I thought about going rear disc. It was about $500 for discs that had an ebrake. Too much for me. My Boxster has 4 wheel discs and Porsche designed a really neat rear disc with an internal drum and ebrake in it.
After I posted that I have parts on the way, I realized I need a clutch cable wing nut. It's on the way now too. Glad my pics are helping. I didn't take a single pic of the brake lines when I took it apart. I've been searching galleries, Google, and patterning it after my Ghia and my wife's Thing. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Thanks Jason. Hope to get more done this weekend. I've been researching powder coating aluminum wheels all day. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Well, got some more parts for the weekend.
Had to get a clutch cable because the one that's been sitting on a shelf for 2 or 3 years now waiting to go it was the wrong one. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Where's your emergency-brake pin? I didn't see it in the pile.
I think I have an extra if you want it.

It's in the bag with the hose hold down clips. Considering powder coating them btw, not sure what color though.
Thank you for the offer. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Worked on the wheels yesterday for hours. Duct tapped off the polished lip and blasted the spokes. Still not done. That black is tough to get off. The black was powder coat and not paint as I originally believed. Should have at least 2 of the done today. Tedious work. But they will be orange and powder coated if it kills me.
Oh, and before any one asks, I used orange tape because it was on clearance for 99 cents at tractor supply and I needed duct tape. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980
