|
|
I heard a number of weeks ago that Subaru still uses flat 4's in their cars. I thought it was crap untill last night in a fit of insomnia I found a site where a guy put a 2.2 water cooled subaru engine in his vanagon.
After a ton of reading and many cups of java I found the place to get the adaptor plates for a subaru-->Beetle engine install.
My questions are;
1) Yes it's a 2.2L engine, and water cooled, does the tranny have to be toughened up?
2) Suspension changes needed?
3) where the HELL do you put the radiator??
4) yeah, I know it's an air cooled board, but a beetle is a beetle is a beetle. _________________ Samba Whipping Boy of '07

for a seriously balls-out, kickass subaru conversion in a beetle go to www.volksrods.com and check out reub revhead's work. _________________ OG JHC

Frankenbeetle,
What were the sites you looked at? Sounds like a cool idea I would like to check out.

There ya go. The convo kit is ~500 including all parts needed. Personally I think this is more bloody inexpensive than building an air cooled 2 litre engine.
But that's not what bugs are about is it? _________________ Samba Whipping Boy of '07

I have seen a few Subaru powered sandrails on the dunes and at the sand dragway. They did not look cheap but they were still getting spanked by type1 and type4 powered rails. I have not seen one in a full bodied VW. But I think Aircooled VW engines are still hard to beat for light weight power. |

You might want to try taking a look at this guys site http://www.ricola.co.uk/ He did a suberu conversion on a speedster kit, ok - not exactly the same as a bug, but he's got a lot of good info on there and its pretty applicable to a bug as its a shared pan / box etc. _________________ https://joeblow.me

You need to pay to play but in the long run it will pay off. No more valve and carb adjustments plus 30+ mpg. Not to mention smoking anything on the streets. Check this 65 out.

Kits / wiring harness plans for stock 2.2 suby.
I have a Legacy motor fogged and setting in the garage and striped out wiring and ecu for a Vanagon someday. The motor is bigger and heavier than T4 maybe not the best for a bug.

This is like reading a time warp... I was incredibly surprised that someone with as many posts as Frankenbeetle had never heard of a sube conversion... I then saw the date... yup... welcome newb!! _________________ 1979 Westfalia, 1975 BMW 2002, 1996 Mazda Miata, 1979 Jeep CJ5, 2006 325 XI Wagon, 2021 M240i (all manual transmission... as god intended.) |
