I plan to paint my Beetle a heavy metalic color and then spray metal flake over that with clear.

I'd like to mount the fenders with a about 1" gap from the body to spray so the metal flake ends up even.

Anyone ever done this before? Stand off the fenders for painting.

Thanks.

I think this is the way they were painted at the factory fenders mounted but not tight to the body.

That's how I always do it. But I don't think you need a gap as wide as one inch. I just use thick metal washers between body and fender.
