|
|
For those who have not done the procedure, this thread is to give the basic concept of various methods used.
Tools/Parts needed:
Rivet bucking bar: Mounts into vise. One can be home-made from a large bolt with the appropriate clip reliefs cut into it with an angle grinder.
Hubcap clips: My buses and I prefer genuine, experienced clips and will drill or cold-chisel them from donor wheels. Common vendors have rookie/fake/New Kids On The Block clips available. Discuss this with your bus to ensure your maintenance practices are in sync and bring harmony instead of mechanical resentment.
Rivets: Find NOS rivets or reproduction. In a pinch, you can buck a round head screw of the right diameter.
Big F'n Hammer!
Post your results!
In this image, the special and commonly available hubcap clip bucking bar has one rivet holding one fake hubcap clip. Below it, many fake hubcap clips abound. Notice the correct size reproduction rivets:
Here I'm smashing/bucking the back side of the special rivet against the special hubcap clip bucking bar mounted in the shop vise -precarious wheel holding required:
Here is a Beetle wheel with an early "Crow's Foot" bus clip bucked onto it (notice the little tab on the hub-side). -finished product:
Video from later in this thread

I wish i had gotten some pics of me when I did this procedure lol. I was squatting on the tire with the rim balanced on the head of a sledge hammer, and a piece of rebar for a rivet holder. |

Someone posted a complete 5-rivet wheel clip bucker they made and I can't seem to find it. THAT was ingenious! Would hope someone could post that here... |

Tip: If you use a ballpeen hammer the ball side you can control where direction you move the material. A large hammer is nice to start it, but the ballpeen helps fine tune where the material is actually going. Learn that from an old sheet metal guy. _________________ Anthony

I did mine on the floor to avoid the whole wheel balancing on the vise shuffle. A 10.9 grade bolt worked great and earned a permanent spot in my drawer of homemade tools.

Hi all,
I have the rivet "buck" from WW and was thinking about using a round punch with it's conical, sharp point set dead center on the flat surface of the rivet and striking the punch to deform the rivet in all directions away from center to further smash the rivet to the rim. Anyone do it that way, or is mashing the rivet head directly with a sledge hammer sufficient? Your photos?

I buck my rivets from the ball side. I install a large peice of round stock in my vise to rest the backside of the rivet on. I then use my air chissel gun. I bought a rivet bucking bit from my snap on gut that has a dimple in the middle of the bit. I just turn my air gun down on low and tap the trigger a couple times and shes bucked!! _________________ Joe

I have a large punch that I rounded off to flare the rivet. It works great and no needed for the ball peen. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

I know it is not stock, but you can skip all the riveting and hammering etc. A flat head machine screw inserted from the back side of the rim, a lock washer, some thread lock, and a nut. Each clip takes about 2 minutes (or less) and, in my experience over the past 3 years, is permanent. Tools required: phillips screwdriver and small end wrench. _________________ Larry in OB

Large hammer to get it started. Then ball peen hammer to spread it more evenly. I still had the clips a little on the loose side, so my final was to put a piece of metal tight against the backside of the rivet and hammer the "buck" a few times, tightened it the rest of the way. _________________ 63 Double Cab http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=443823&highlight=deanos

I am having a bunch of wheels P/Ced so I went ahead and made the bucking jig, like I said I would! I smash the rivets with a drift and big hammer.
Works great! _________________ Josh The Bus Guy formerly known as JOGR

I made a jig a few years back, but now I just use the nut and bolt method mentioned earlier. I am no longer a purist. _________________ nothing |
