My name is Tony, live in Portland Oregon. Little about me I had a 69 Baja that I sold a few years back it was in project stages and I grew tired of working on it. Sold it and bought a jeep dumped a ton of money in it all along thinking " if I wouldst put all this money into that bug, if have the baddest bug in oregon". Well the jeep is pretty much done and I'm ready for a new project.

I bought a 69 that had already been bajad, turned out engine is rusted, brakes rusted, fuel tank rusted, pans OK, ended up needing more work then I expected.

Once I figure out how to post pics I invite you all to fallow my build, criticise, and give advice.

. OK I think I figured it out. This was my first Baja, bought it while deployed, drove it a bit when I got out of the military. Ended up selling it to buy a jeep and build it. Now that I know what to do to post I will upload some more photos later this morn.

As promised here are some pics.
Shortly after bringing it home, drivers door stuck (not the linkage like we thought)
Pads torn off shoes lots more wish I would have dug a little better.

Interior torn out. Was going to raptor line but found a couple small rust holes. Sprayed withospho going to just paint it black

It has a pretty cool look about 17" of ground clearance 33's in the back and 31's up front.

I think its a thing front beam I was told that its better, why?

Your beam is from a vw thing. It is better because the balljoints both face down. It is reinforced from the factory and can take more punishment than a stock bug beam. The trailing arms are also longer giving more lift.

Thanks for the explanation and comments. I'm looking at having it on the road by the beginning of the year. Not going to paint it just cover some bare metal. Main issue is building the engine. Its a dual port 1776 single Weber c35 cam, has a built bug tyranny with a an aftermarket case ( can't remember brand)

Looking forward to getting it on the road. Hopefully I can remember to take pics of my progress.

From that pic how could you tell it's a thing beam? Only way I really know is to look for a gusset on the shock tower... I thing the body is in the way, so the bug guys add a little gusset. I just see thing spindles on what's likely a vw beam.. Still an improvement, also the trailing arm tubing is of thicker material then the beetle's. Also the thing spindles give a 3" lift because the big stud is lower then a bug's. Just did the same to mine.

Nice bug and jeep, jeep reminds me of my old CJ5

The lower link ballpoint sits above the mount so when the suspension cycles the lower mount pushes int the balljoint rather then pull the balljoint up. Beetle nut on top thing nut on bottom. I understand it that way at least.

Started putting the engine together today. Missed one step and noticed it as I was admiring my work. Forgot the woodrift key. Hope I can get that in its little groove. Going to put a heater in the car tonight. Get to wire wheel the interior tommarow[/img]

I was putting the jug studs in and used the same goop on the threads that I used on the case half's. The studs never set up hard so I removed them cleaned the threads an used blue locktight. Do any of you see issues with that?

cc'd the heads, deck hight taken, im right about 8.4 for the compression ratio. 1776 dual port, c35 cam, all balanced. single 32/36 weber. exhaust is going to be normal baja type but with heater tubes, and a 40 series flow master i have laying around. been a slower build then i like, but its been fun to let my girlfriends son be involved.

interior has been por 15'd new headlights and buckets, new to me gas tank, have braided stainless brake lines, need to run new hard lines, install new brake parts. little paint on the interior put the doors back together should be able to be driving soon. pics to come.

Well some what good news for me today, I drained the transmission and there was no water contamination or metal pieces. One thing out of the way. Any one give me a heads up on how to tell ring and pinion without taking it apart and without knowing transmission gear ratios.
