Traded a motorcycle for this car recently. I will be rebuilding it and using it for recreation and daily driving in the future. Open to any suggestions or ideas as I go through the build. I'll keep it updated with pictures and whatnot. Comment or PM as you'd like.

Also, if this car looks familiar to anyone, I would like to hear from you. I know it was built (many years ago) as a Class 5, and has completed the Baja 1000 twice. It is powered by a CIS Rabbit motor, and a Bus 3-rib. Had a blue early 60's bug body on it with the number '281'.

Thank you.

The KYB 5530 shocks all around with the quad rear shock arrangement and other features suggest it was last raced in the early to mid 80s. The fact it has the VW pan suggests it may have been built in the 70s, but the cage is based on a Chenowth Class 11 cage kit, which means it wasn't caged until pretty close to 1980 at the earliest.

I would add tubing to complete the tube that runs back from the lower tube of the beam to complete it so it runs all the way through to the rear torsion housing.

What are your plans for it?

It actually looks like it was originally set up with a triple rear shock, which you can see if you look closely just aft of the upper mounts for the quad shocks. (I can tell what was original and what came later by the quality of the welds, haha.) The quad shocks appear to be set up with a better geometry so I will plan on keeping them. It does look like the cage is a class 11, then added on to.

I will plan on adding that tubing...but where would i put it, exactly? I'd like to get a body back on it soon...would the tubing run completely inboard of the sills?

This is actually the 2nd time today I've recommended that same tube in different cars, both with Chenowth Class 11 cages.

The reason that tube was not included in the original design, is that it was not allowed in the original Class 11 rules. Experience over the years showed that Class 11 cars tended to break across the pan just at the front of the A pillar cage tube and the torsion housings and frame forks would bend and/or break. Current Class 11 rules allow whatever tubes you want in the roll cage to deal with those common breaks.

The triple shocks may have been on a lay-down Bus Reduction axle judging by how far back on the frame the upper mounts are.

That fuel cell needs to be replaced.

I am removing the door cages because they make it very hard to enter/exit the car...not good for daily driving. They will be replaced by a single diagonal tube on each side. The car is almost as stripped as it is gonna get...ready for a lot of weld repair, a few modifications, and some paint...then I'll start putting it back together.

dustymojave-

I see now which tube you meant, and I'll definately put it there. Looks like the drivers side torsion tube has been broken and repaired before on this car.

That fuel cell seems good to me. I was going to tear apart the aluminum box around it and have a look. Why do you think it's bad?
