I have a '63 type 1 stock minus a 1776cc and trans. I'm currently ready to drop some $ to get a stance, look, and feel i can enjoy. It's my daily driver, so I have to do it right the first time.
Story goes: my king/link are super worn out. As soon as it hits 55 mph it starts wobbling like an 10.0 earthquake. My tires are also worn to the bone. I'm taking this opportunity to put work into it that I've been wanting to do: slamming it, adding disc brakes all around, and finishing it off with some deep dish smoothies.
I've been talking with Russ at Oldspeed who's going to do all the technical work, and Joe (who I found on here) that's making me the deep dish smoothies. They have both given me tons of advice, but given that I'm a visual learner and a newbie to all things V-Dub, I need more help and advice before I make the plunge.
I want my bug to look like this '58:
or like:
Here is my bug as is:
I'm trying to do all that I said with 5.5's in the front, and 7's in the rear. While making it practical and safe to drive everyday. Is a narrowed beam necessary if I add deep dish wheels and disc brakes? Any suggestions? _________________ '63 Volkswagen Type 1. Stock -(1776 cc) |

Your bug has inspired me. I've been talking to Joe and a specialist named Russ from Oldspeed, and I've been trying to figure out what your set up is like. Do you have a narrowed beam? What size wheels are you sporting? I'd appreciate any info you're willing to give. _________________ '63 Volkswagen Type 1. Stock -(1776 cc) |

You'll need a 3-4" beam depending on how much wider the disc are than drums. More than that if you want to "tuck" the wheels instead of being flush.
This is my '64 with stock drums, a 3" beam, 2.5" spindles, and 5.5" mangels on 195/50's. Almost flush with the fender lips.

What's the difference between the "tuck and flush" looks? Sorry I'm a newbie with all this lingo.
Nice ride by the way. How low did you go? _________________ '63 Volkswagen Type 1. Stock -(1776 cc) |

Tucked would be a super narrow beam (~5-6"+) that pulls the wheels farther into the fenderwell. Also depends on wheel width; my stock 4" smoothies with 145's are tucked a little with the 3" beam. Flush is with the wheel out even with or close to the fender lip. In that pic the frame head was about 2.75" off the ground and I could barely get my finger between the tire and fender lip at the top so it's almost flush with the 195's and 5.5" wheels. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. Got it. I'd prefer it flush. So how do I figure what'll fit? At this point I'm figuring 4" narrowed beam, 2.5 drop spindles, plus the 3/4 the disc brakes will add, 5.5 x 15's in the front with 145/50's, and 7 x 15's with 195/50's or 195/60's in the rear with possibly 1 - 2 clicks. Any pointers to figure out what'll fit? _________________ '63 Volkswagen Type 1. Stock -(1776 cc) |

Go ahead and get your beam, spindles, and brakes installed and throw the stock wheels on to see how much more wheel width you can fit. Will probably be 5-6".
On the rear you can run 3" more lip added into a stock smoothie (7" with stock backspacing) and you'll have about 1/2" clearance from the wheel lip to the fender. Watch your tire size, you wouldn't want a sidewall that bulged past the rim of the wheel. This is only with stock short axles and undamaged fenders. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. Take the best that exist and make it better. If it doesn't exist, create it. Right, the only problem is Joe (56) is telling me the same (to get the work done so he could make the wheels around my new build), but Oldspeed is telling me to get my wheels and tires done so they can build around the wheels. I'm in a predicament. _________________ '63 Volkswagen Type 1. Stock -(1776 cc) |

Russell at Old Speed is a very smart guy when it comes to suspension/brakes. You can either contact others that have already built cars the way you want your cars to look, then replicate the beam specs and then have Joe build your rims to replicate them.
Or
Ask Joe what the offset/backspacing is on the size rims you want and give that info to Russell and have him build around it.
Either way, you have two pretty capable guys helping you build your car. If you like the way the rims look on the cars that Joe has put rims on, I would get the rim backspacing/offset and send that info to Russell.
My 2 cents. |

Thanks, I think I have it a bit more figured out. Joe's and Russell's reputation have made me feel confident in working with them.
It starts:

I have standard worn out drum brakes
By spacing do you mean the width of the rim? I dont have any spacers on. _________________ Aircooled Volkswagen Forever |
