On a side note my oil pressure has recently started to increase. It is usually 50-60 cold and 40 hot, but now it is starting at 80psi cold and off the scale when I am moving.
Anyone know what might be causing this, or where I could look. I am not sure if it is accurate, or a gauge fault. |
How much colder are the ambient temps? Oil pressure/temps seem to affected by ambient temperatures, but CHTs seem to be less inclined to change with climate. Today I had 52psi at 4,000 RPM by the beach, then we climbed a mountain to the central desert and had 45psi at 4k RPM. Up another mountain, back down to the coast, and we had 52psi @ 4k again.
The simplicity of these engines is lost in the ether of anomalies like these.

For sure the OP is higher with the colder temps but just recently it has been really hot here in Canada and this reading is way to high to be outside temp related.
I am seeing a little more oil leaking also, from the front pulley too
If the oil pressure relief valve is stuck would that cause super high pressure?

I believe so. Some good reading;
http://www.vw-resource.com/oiling_system.html
The oil pressure relief valve is located at the pulley end of the engine, near the oil pump (on the right in the above schematic). When the oil is cold and thick, the resulting increased oil pressure forces the valve down against spring tension. This allows oil from the oil pump to go directly to the engine bearings. In by-passing the oil cooler, warm-up is speeded and the oil cooler is protected against excessive pressures that might cause it to burst.
If either valve is stuck or sticks intermittently in its closed position, it can cause excessive oil pressure.

Ben,
I watched the where is Sharne video. That must have been tough to make. She was the best vw traveling partner you have had yet. I will miss that. But will keep watching your amazing travels. Good luck. Keep on bussing.

Yeah she was good wasn't she.
Perhaps my oil pressure guage is acting up. After I Started it then turned it off and back to red lights showing the oil pressure stayed at 40psi with out the engine running. That isn't possible is it? _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

A few technical issues addressed in this week's vlog - alternator rear plate got warped and started the alternator knocking. Front break shoes repaced and calipers and more frustrating breakdowns.
I didn' t even get chance to mention the fuel leaks we had from a cracked o-ring. had to sand it down and put it back in as there were no replacements for 2 hours drive. Scary drive that was!

Really wanted to mate - don't know if you saw the video but had very little time and many problems to resolve, most of which weren't kombi related for a change _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

|
|
Hey guys I've been smelling unburnt gas recently, it's very strong inside the bus. I keep stopping to investigate but find it very difficult to track it down when stationary, although I've tried with the engine running and off.
I have checked all the gas lines form the tank and into the engine but can find anything wet or leaking. I am really Really worried!
Does anyone have any experience of this issue or any ideas where the gas smell might. Be coming from?
British Columbia already has enough fires going on I don't want to be responsible for burning down more of the Provence.
Any advice appreciated. _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

Found the leak. It was some loose jublie clips on the back of the motor on the injector rail. They weren't leaking when motor was stationary but with the vibrations caused it to leak a little.
I once read that you should change the fuel lines every two years but honestly after 6 months I started to see cracking on the outer casing. I've tried a few different types of fuel line. Anyone else experiencing similar issues?
Thanks guys! _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

Hmm, 6 months? What kind of fuel hose? Have you used Gates Barricade?
German braided?
Gates is better against corrosion when Using Ethanol blended fuel. But 6 months from whatever hose your using. Yikes! Is it the clips doing damage? _________________ Keep on Busin'

You need to be using a 30r9 hose or the high pressure variant of the Gates 30r14 Barracade hose. There are DIN equivalents as well. |

The fuel hose may have been aged-in-storage before it was put into use.
Good eyes, you'll make it to Alaska yet. |

Yeah maybe, but I think I bought this last batch in Autozone so I don't think that they would be aged - but who knows. I use the standard jubilee clips, perhaps they are doing the damage.
Just bought a second bigger fire extinguisher today...just in case _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

I'm in Banff which means I made it to Alberta Canada!!!!
Now I have to drive up the Rocky mountains to Jasper and then somehow from the to the Arctic! Slightly scared about how many miles that is! You guys are probably going to be hard to reach over this next 2 months. I hope I can get online when I need some advice.
Hope you all have a great weekend _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

Lucky you to be in the Canadian Rockies! If you make a stop at Lake Louise (which most tourists do), you'll see a sign for Moraine Lake - I think it's about 11km to the lake. It's well worth the short drive. Lake Louise is a world-famous beauty spot, but we think Moraine Lake is even more beautiful. If the weather is good, the drive from Lake Louise to Jasper along the Icefields Parkway is unforgettable.
Best of luck on your Alaskan adventure! _________________ '78 Sage Green California Westy 'Ludwig Van'

I change my Fuel lines every 6 months (even with the Gates Barricade). I also see cracks at the clamp ends. The fuel just liquefies the hose upon contact, I replace all the hose when swapping out the fuel filter to avoid pushing little bits of line into the delivery system. Enjoy your wonderful journey, some of the best views in the world! _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

Icefields parkway is a fantastic drive, have driven my bus over it many times. You're still in populated territory for a bit. Things get remote once you're north of Fort St. John. |

Hey guys,
I am making final inspections and review of the Kombi today before i push on up to the Arctic circle. Very nervous and I wanted to ask you guys what would you be checking in your bus if you were about to do this crazy long drive. I thought if we put our heads together I am less likely to miss something obvious
proposed route:
Also I am sending out Kombi Life stickers to help raise money for gas: If you want to pitch in on a tank you can find out more details here: http://www.kombilife.com/stickers/
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
So today I discovered the spark plugs, rotar and cap all worn and CHT sensor broken so going to deal with that. Checked the CV joints are tight and the bottom head studs which were 80% tight, a couple slightly loose.
Also adjusted the valves which were pretty much were they should be because they are hydraulics but did notice that they valve stems are slightly concaved, not a problem that I've had before but then I have never had an engine last this long before
Hopefully the slight concave valvue stem isn't of major concern?
I have a slightly loose king-pin on the front left wheel, hoping that problem doesn't persist.
What else should I check before I make this difficult 4000km run up to Alaska?
Is there anyone out there? Where did you guys go? Hopefully you are all out on your own bus trips somewhere _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries
