Even if you can't make the connection with Bruce, the temp sensor is not a worry, you can get one at Radio Shack:

The transaxle is the critical bit. _________________ The consequences of your decisions should not be confused with fate. |

Interesting post - saved from future reference, thanks. You are right I can move without the sensor, I can't without a tranny _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

This may be moot or out of the question, but VW Heritage out of the UK has Brazilian Kombi stuff.

Not sure if this would help...

Not sure about this...

I wonder if you would be able to make it to Tok, or hopefully Wasilla / Anchorage area. There are at least a lot of parts here comparatively. Bigbore checks his PMs often and knows a VW guy in Whitehorse so that may be another option. PM Bigbore.
We are in Anchorage for a bit longer if you do make it here.. _________________ 2.2 Suby powered - 75 Westy - Rita

It seems to me that you have a repairable trans. Total dis-assembly and a caliper would reveal the condition of all components. The broken gear would fit into a usps flat rate box (large) for $17.10 and could be reworked by a pro-welder. There would be learning curve in the trans but you could post every step of the way here and get help (not to mention some great youtube vids). Just more adventure!!! I have welded up some crazy stuff on heavy equipment and obsolete machinery, it can be done. _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

Once upon a time, I was driving from Santa Cruz to Phoenix...
My friend Sticks and I both had our Harleys partially dis-assembled inside the bus.
Sticks was taking the late shift driving, and stopped for gas.
Upon re-entry onto the highway, he reached for 4th gear at the top of third... found 2nd... and dumped the clutch(!)
I was in back sleeping, and it almost knocked me out of bed.
The bus immediately went silent, and was coasting.
He re-started it, and we went to Phoenix and back.
Later, we went to Shasta and back.
Because we (he) bent a valve, it made a 'chiffing' noise and ran hot.
So the motor came apart.
I changed the trans oil while i was back there, and found about three times as many teeth as in your pic.
When the trans came apart later, there were fully six broken teeth on the ring gear.
And, all this time, I had no idea there was a problem in thousands of miles..
So,
These things can really be tough, and go a long way with broken teeth.
Just sayin'...
Maybe instead of giving it away at the end, you can just ceremonially flatten it with a bulldozer or something instead? _________________ Bus Motor Build

I like the last part the best!
I've been weighing up if I should drive it and from my research the type of transaxle in my Kombi is much weaker than a normal bus, that plus the very remote locations that I will be visiting in Alaska makes me nervous about pushing it. My Kombi is worked pretty hard, carries around 4000lbs and is used a lot. I still need to get maybe 8 to 10,000 miles left out of it before i am done with this trip.
I am also concerned about the lateness of the season, it is already snowing on the Dalton highway where I was headed so if something does go wrong it is going to be hell to resolve. If my particular kombi has taught me anything, it's that when it starts making noises that I don't recognize, I need to stop and fix it ASAP.
You might be right though, it might make it, but I think it would be foolish to try given my track record and previous luck with this Bus.
I haven't been able to track down a replacement transaxle that will fit straight in and a few experts have said that there is likely a lot more than just the R&P that needs fixing once it is open so I am hoping to get someone to build a custom tranny for me over winter. That is what I am working on now. _________________ Around The World in a VW - Follow the Docuseries

You need to find a '73 Single Side Cover bug transmission. Those are the stronger bug transmissions.
Quote: |
1973 - 1979 SSC IRS Type 1 transmission: SSC for Single Side cover. 3.875 final drive ratio. These transmissions got the same internal gears as the 5 rib 002 bus trans. |

All good, except the 3.88 is completely wrong for a heavy bus. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

wouldn't a 68-70 bus transmission bolt in there and have the right ratio?or is this where the drive flange issue would be. i suggest not rushing your trip thru alaska.i have been here 20+ years and haven't even seen 5% of it.getting towed off the dalton highway or any where is expensive and thats if you don't end up being a hood ornament on a kenworth truck.be safe.all the best .jeff |

I think he'd have to use a 10 Degree kit to do that. Brazilian Kombis use the same cradle that US splits have. So he's rocking a T1 transmission that has Thing flanges in order to use Bus Cvs (I think)
So putting in a larger transmission would mean cutting the cradle a little bit and either tipping the transmission by 10 degrees. Or maybe getting away with a T1 nosecone. _________________ Wash your hands

A 4.37 would be better, but even that is geared lower than the factory trans. Hopefully the original R&P isn't shot and can be reused. That may be asking for a lot though.
PS- I'm ready for another video update _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |
