The only info on this is what I read in the book. Feel free to add to it or correct it.

While reading through a VW book titled "The Beetle, the chronicles of the peoples car, Vol 2 design & evolution-the story" I came across some really cool photos. These are of a car that was designed by Ferdinand Porsche & built in 1939 by Reutter. You can definately see the 356 shape here. It was designated the VW type 60 K 10 but also called a Porsche type 64.

Info from the book -- A total of three were built to race in the Berlin to Rome race in mid September of 1939. The race was called off due to the start of WWII on September 01, 1939. During the war Ferdinand used one of the cars for courier duties, KDF leader Bodo Lafferentz drove the second one until it expired & the third car remained in Porsche's possession. One of the cars that Porsche had was requisitioned by the Americans after the war & fell apart for lack of attention.

It also says one is still in existance owned by Otto Mathe, an Austrian. Book was published in 1985 so who knows where it could be.

VW has a new car for China that reminds me of the Berlin to Rome car. See:

I would have posted the photos here, but couldn't remember how--wish it were easier.

I stand ready for correction, but the fotos above are, I believe, the VW 1Liter car, developed a couple-three years ago to achieve 100 mi./liter of gas and was intended for Europe/World market.

Here is pic of Otto's type 64 when they had it at Goodwood over here. I took the photo in the rain about 8 years ago I forget exactly. I was surprised they put a black plastic bag in the door window to stop the rain getting in.
It carries his reg number and I have posted before the his other early Gmuend car that was there that day.

I seem to remember a story he would have allowed Porsche to have it back but someone rejected it? Anyone know about that?
