Adjusted the valves and replaced the valve cover gaskets, outside in the elements wearing shorts! 80 degrees. I'm not used to working on it in warm weather;)

Thanks Steve!

DAY 237

I put on about 70 miles seeking out some old favorite fishing spots after arriving at one of my favorite little streams to find it is on posted land now😠.

On the bright side I did manage to get some fresh fish and found some more places for quick photo opportunities.

Gah, you tease me so with the awesome pictures and adventures you have! I miss mine!!

But that's a good thing--I love what you're doing with your car (as in, driving it!). Cool

DAY 240

Yesterday we took our first trip with A-Bomb in a long time. 250 miles total to and from just north of Jamaica VT. We did have to make one unexpected stop on the way when I noticed in the rear view mirror that a big bee was flying around the back window. Everyone jumped out but me and I coaxed it out my window. I was originally looking for this spot on a river up there and must of remembered it wrong. It seemed like it was taking a real long time to get there so we headed back the way we came but we found something just as good.

8 Months

366 miles this week, I think that's a new record! With my 80 mile fishing trip and our 250 mile trip to and from Vermont yesterday.

There are adventures to be had even when not running! I know it's hard to trouble shoot but very rewarding when you get things worked out. In other words don't wait for that mechanic to call you back. Try and gel it going your self. All the info is here and in repair manuals but you have to figure it out. I'm no expert but have worked different forms of problems out often. Sometimes it's something simple like a spring that came off the secondary on Herbie's carb causing it to smoke and sometimes it's more complicated and takes days to figure out. Over all the air cooled vehicle ownership will be much more enjoyable if you don't have to rely on somebody els and you will be on the road more.

I'm not nearly as confident nor adventurous as you, Brent, but I really like your philosophy, and do try, wherever possible, to figure stuff out & try to fix it on my old VWs.

I am still tinkering with my '69 Bug, trying to get it to run better, and it seems that each time I spend some time with it, I learn a little bit more, if not make at least some minor progress.

I'm thinking with this much warmer weather that car should start running happier for you, Steve.

Week 36

95 miles total this week. Most of the mileage was to and from Westover Air Reserve Base yesterday. Unfortunately about 8 miles of it was stop and go for an hour but the old car did well with it! The whole time I'm thinking of stuff that can go wrong in that time. like a clutch cable breaking or the car just quitting on me.

Well, the good news is that I am finally home for about a week more and have started tackling the car once more. Wink Good stuff!!

Week 37

65 miles this week total. Another fine week with The Abominable Snowmobeetle! I learned real quick at the Dunkin Donuts drive through Friday that the rain guards make it hard to see the person at the window when getting my coffee. Oh well. I took A-Bomb to work in the AM Friday then drove Herbie back from the drive in movie later that night.

DAY 255

During Memorial Day weekend I did little driving with A-Bomb but one place I did have to make a trip to was the local bait shop. No I didn't take the car when we went fishing though. I don't have all the stuff to put my canoe on the roof anymore and it's just easier with the truck. I'll have to give it a try in the near future.

Another reason for putting on few miles last weekend....

DAY 259

Or should I say night. Oil check after getting home with my homemade work light from a tail light bulb wired to alligator clips. I didn't even need a flash for the picture. That's the save my bug hot oil temp sensor in the foreground. I did manage to scribe some marks on it but I use a stock dipstick just to be sure. See http://www.savemybug.com/

DAY 260

Some more ordinary driving today. An award ceremony at my sons school.

For the past two weeks I've been busy with projects on the two modern cars so this car has been real good at the whole being a regular daily driver for me. Just like during the worst part of the winter when I was spending more time doing snow removal than working on it. It didn't need much from me.

Day 261

I drove all around the state of Connecticut. First a trip to one of our favorite places for seafood, Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale 1301 Boston Post Rd Madison, CT. Then to Hammonasset Beach State Park also in Madison. The only way this car will ever see salt again, at the beach. Then stopped at another favorite place for some ice cream on the way home at Dairy Cream 395 Ella Grasso Turnpike Windsor Locks. It turned out to be about 200 miles round trip. I took the wrong route down there and added an extra 20 miles to our trip.

Oh yeah about two weeks ago added the 1300 script. I picked up a deck lid from the CVA swap & meet up in Clinton. The repaint color looked close but wasn't so I just added the script to the one that came with the car when I got it. Don't know why it didn't have it but the deck lid that came with the car was L87 pearl white.

DAY 263

With the sudden cool weather I decided to make a fix for the passenger side heater box. I had to extend the piece that goes to the heater box lever. Before the only option was to be half open when I turned the heat off.

DAY 265

100 more....
I decided to change the oil the other night. It was a couple weeks early but what's a couple weeks? It seems that when the oil gets low or it about due for a change the oil pressure light flickers from time to time. It happens at the same points on the way to work and then the way home. Maybe it's because I went with a TRW instead of the $34.00 German one but it seems to be a good indicator of oil levels or condition of the oil.
