Summer is much better than winter!
And, as usual, I'm glad to see that you're still Bugging away. |
I agree with you there, I like summer better! Looking back though this thread even early spring is better. You still have the whole summer yet to come and your finally able to go out and start doing things again. Fall is nice with all the colors and all but winter is soon to come. Kind of looming.
Day 356
Speaking of fall colors, even with our recent heat waive some trees are starting to change already.
Here are some other pictures from today's stop for a picnic on Soapstone Hill Somers CT. in the center of this photo from the overlook is the farm we were picking apples on day 345 (Johnny Appleseed's).

Since this was the last full weekend driving Project 66 Daily Driver we took a trip to Townshend State Park in Townshend Vermont.
The GPS sent us on an adventurous way through Brattleboro on our way to the Townshend State Park.
We went up on Friday. On Saturday took a 263 mile round trip up RT 30N RT 100N to Green Mountain Coffee Cafe & Visitor Center in Waterbury Vermont. We have been up RT 100 dozens of times but have never been north of Killington Vermont before and that is how we found Moss Glen Falls! It was just a few miles north of Killington and we have never seen it before. I just happened to see it out my window in time to pull over and have a look.
After stopping to pick up lunch we were looking for another Vermont roadside picnic area to stop when we found a nice town green kind of an area to have lunch. As we were sitting there I noticed the sign for the Green Mountain Coffee Cafe & Visitor Center. We didn’t even realize we were already there when we stopped. I think the GPS was sending us on another adventurous way like it did through Brattleboro on our way to the campground.
We took all highways back from the Green Mountain Coffee Cafe & Visitor Center, RT 89S & 91S about 120 miles. That is the longest I have ever had the car on the highway at one time.
Saw this on the way back South on 89 couldn't tell if that is Arizona or what for the plate.

So what are you doing for an encore?? I loved this thread...especially with you being in the New England area where the weather is never nice in the winter...
It shows these cars are still a reliable piece of transportation....even at their age.
Thanks for posting all this past year...you are my hero for sure...

Yeah, great thread indeed, I drove my 63 for years every day, once I'd sorted out a few issues, it ran like a watch!
Some people would be surprised, but that is what these cars where designed to do, just run and run. _________________ If you can't join them, beat them! |

First off thanks for following the thread! I realize I’m no writer whatsoever and sometimes all details aren’t there or there are grammatical errors so kudos to you Volks who were able to follow along this journey. I’m astounded at the number of views this thread has received as well (maybe I looked at it 41000 times idk).for those of you who haven’t chimed in and are following go ahead and check in. Tell us what you’ve got and any threads you may have going. I would love to see what others are up to with these incredible little cars!
These cars are the true hero’s though; you get so much from so little. They must have been incredible right from the factory.
What I’m going to do for an encore is a good question. Until a month ago I never really gave that much thought. I was never really 100 percent sure if the car was going to hold up to a whole year. So many variables, unknown age on the generator voltage regulator and starter. Or the possibility of the transaxle going and that would have killed this then and there. I think it’s the originally transaxle. Then there is the engine that I, a complete amature built. It’s only the second AC VW engine that I have built at the time using parts from three different engines and some new bearings and seals. All along these things were going through my mind when driving this past year…..
But to answer the question that Stock Steve put to me over a month ago also. First of all I’m going to save money on my insurance premiums by going back to the antique insurance.
Next summer we are planning a trip from Connecticut to Virginia or more south and I would love to take it there or a trip as big. My only concern is the possibility of a break down. It could be something simple like a bearing, wheel cylinder or steering box and we are stuck trying to find a part even though they are kind of easy to get parts for. I mention the bearing first off cause that’s my biggest worry since I do have a tow bar but that would kill that plan. I have some planning and research to do. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=

Day 365!
No big celebration or big trip, just regular everyday driving. That was last weekend.
Some gas mileage numbers:
I haven’t been keeping track till a few weeks ago due to taking fuel for the lawn mower. on day 340 I filled up at a gas station I haven't used before near Bradley Airport instead of the one on RT 20 that I got less mileage at. It turned out to be 23 MPG with most of my driving on 50MPH roads out in the eastern part of the state. I previously got 30MPG doing the same routes maybe it was the temps at the time. Then The Stop and Shop gas was doing good till I filled the car with camping gear and "implements of destruction" then headed north to Vermont. The mileage went back down to 20 MPG with all the extra weight. So maybe the gas station I filled up at back in July (Day 308) on the CT MA boarder was OK. During the trip north form Townshend VT to Waterbury VT the mileage was at 33MPG. That’s pretty good with three people, dog and some gear plus all the mountains we climbed.

Day 366
one more trip with it today......
8092 miles total driving for the year and 11345 since its return to life. Funny note on that, I just realized yesterday that is how many miles it has been 12 volt. When I got the car it was halfway converted. I had to finish the job. The guy gave me every bulb needed to do it. Kind of like a kit car. The headlights and some other miscellaneous bulbs were still 6 volt at the time. _________________ Project 66 Daily Driver http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538786&highlight=
