Looks like I took advantage of a short opportunity yesterday . Now we get hit with a snow storm. Something tells me I will be out with the other air cooled to the right in this pic today.

Well during the break from being able to drive this car again, today on one of the coldest days of the year I pulled the drivers side headlight wiring harness out to repair the damage done to it last week.

Since it is so cold out I figured I could have it out in a few minutes and get back in the house to repair the wiring. Not the case, I didn't realize the horn wiring was part of it all and pulled the tank partially to get it all out. I lubed the wires up to get them to get them through the grommet that goes through the firewall.

To repair the harness I stripped the wire loom for the headlight wires, cleaned up the wires and added some insulation between them just in case the wire fire melted the original insulation. There was a good burn where the high and low beam wires go by the ground wire for the headlight. I fixed that as well. I had some original wiring left from Herbie when I replaced the complete harness so I was able to replace the grey wire with a grey with black strip. After a little cleaning with degreaser I cleaned most of the black off. I finished up by re wrapping the harness with electrical tape. Later Ill get some new wire loom and replace the grommets for this as well.

and of course I am working on the fusees also. I spliced in the original wiring plus the proper 8 amp fuse.

I installed a new headlight wire tube but it was so tight I mangled the first headlight terminal by pulling it through greased and all. then broke the second on the way in but couldn't get the third to even go. After cutting the terminals off the four wires were still a bear to pull through. Luckily I had some extra head light plugs to fix the mangled terminals. Still one of my favorite threads.

I really like how you just drive it and enjoy it as a car. There's no slammed suspension, overtly lopey massive engine, or super shiny bass boat paintjob, or look how many awards I got, or this is not the correct year only nut burried deep in some insignificant place, or some concourse elegance "yes its matching numbers", or its not rust its patina, or trailer Queen, or I have the only set of production wheels from some obscure manufacturer, or o have every option known to man out of the og empi catalogue before empi turned to shit, or this was actually imported before Ben pon imported the first beetles. And while a lot of people are into that, which that's cool I'm not judging here, it just kinda stands out to me.

While I do kind of enjoy threads and posts and discussions or rants like that this is kind of a breath of fresh air, work a little, drive a little, show interesting places type thread. I makes me realize how much a small part of owning a vw can be missed by all of these distractions. I think when I look back at 16-20 year old me I honestly would have said so what. Now that I'm turning 30 (I know that's still spring chicken to a lot of you guys) I'm beginning to understand that the small important things are what makes ownership and enjoyment really come from vs how can I make it beat a Honda.

Just wanted to say thanks and I'm headed to work on the Ghia tonight.

Its kind of like the saying " life is is a journey not a destination"

That being said Ill be continuing the journey today with our sudden warm temps here in the North East. Its 50 degrees out there now and my son and I have already gone out to do some birthday shopping and just enjoying the old car in general.

Last weekend I'm tearing wiring out of it then this weekend putting on 120 miles to and from Old Lyme CT for the CVA member dinner. This was the longest trip on the highway at night. I just haven't been on the highway so much at night with it. Good thing I got the headlight back together and working. I had to use the marker lights on the way down....

and I wasn't the only air cooled there!

I finished up the wire loom. Since I had ten feet I did the other side also. I ran the wires for the signal lights into it also. Just need to get some smaller diameter loom to finish the job.

Oh yeah put the door card back on.. eh after heating and putting weight on it ... oh well it went right back to bent. after being that way for like thirty years that's how it will stay.

Such a good response from Ghia Nut that I had to reply again to some of my favorite parts of that post. Last week I was busy working on the car to get it ready for Saturdays trip south so I didn’t get the time to reply with full remarks.

I’m not a stickler for original stuff but I kind of go for a 74 with a 60s body. Like the previous owner of our 65 he kept switching things with the later model VW parts when he could.
12 V, 200 mm clutch, 1600 DP engine, duel master cylinder, 12V switches in the dash and we have the later 66 gas pedal in that car.

My intention was, one to use what I got and two try and go for that survivor look.
It also has 113000 original miles on it plus some unoriginal as well. no documentation to prove it had just 100000 on it when I got it but I was the first one to do things like pull the trans axle, replace three out of four ball joints. One was not OG. Lots of the original stuff was still with this car although warn or warn out.

Just finished up the other headlight. The passenger side came out real nice. Not perfect but Id say 8 out of 10. Ive got a few lenses to work with but somehow that side looks real good. The drivers side I went too far buffing the chrome so I may got to anther one that I have or just end up replacing them later on and that one was never going to come out perfect anyhow.

The whole process started a few years ago when I was working on making these operational again and all the rubber pieces were dried up. I replaced them with some 1/8 inch interior sized fuel line that I had from NAPA.

First test of the newly refurbished headlight assemblies. Also now that I've driven it this month I can say that I have driven it every month through winter thanks to a somewhat mild winter this year.

We had some real nice weather last week and I was fortunate to be able to take A- Bomb out five of seven days last week.

I spotted this baja beetle last week on my way to one of my favorite burger makers. When I come across another air cooled on the road I wonder whats going through the person's head behind me. "ugh another one of those?"

Also did some work on it during them nice temps. I stated earlier in the thread that "I purchased the cheap body seal kit from J Bugs." I didn't mean it the way that came out. It just wasn't the top seal kit that they had. So Ive been slowly swapping the things that have cracked since getting the car going. This past weekend I swapped out the signal light seals front and back with West Coast Metric seals. Ive had a rash of rubber failures on Herbie lately that I was under the impression were to be of quality so I'm only going with WCM from now on.

New rear floor mat for A- Bomb. I can't believe i did it but I got the cut out right on for the E Brake boot. I never get that stuff so perfect. You can see in the second shot the template I made for the boot. I had to make the cut for it but there was a little bit of a mark to start with. I also made the cut outs for the seat belts.

Recently I came across some service bulletins here on how to add a reverse light switch to pre 67 Beetles. It looked like a fun project and something I could fabricate. I split up a set of 67 reverse lights between our 65 and 66. a CVA member gave me them last year, complete with bulbs and they cleaned up nice.

I decided to try to make the style with the arm that attaches to the shift rod to push the switch when shifted to reverse. During some testing with thin sheet metal I found that there is only 10 millimeters difference between second gear and reverse with my version. The arm needed to go over the switch to not push it for second gear. I needed to find a small momentary on switch that doesn't need a lot of pressure to complete the circuit. I found one at Home Depot of all places. That and stuff I already had the reverse light switch cost me about 5 dollars.

Testing it looked good. I may switch the arm that pushes the switch. It was just temporary for now with a piece of sheet metal held on by a hose clamp but I liked the way it worked. I'll bet once I decide it all works good and put the cover on and seat back then it will stop working.

In the service bulletin it shows how to wire it up. I ran the wire a little differently because it was going to be just too much trouble to try to get the wire behind the tar board. If I take the engine out any time soon Ill reroute it. I also ran both wires through the Cables Exit Chassis Boot kind of using it like a grommet. From terminal 15 on the coil I added an inline fuse holder and ran the wire behind the carb like the instructions show, to the wire clamp on the fan shroud wrapped in a piece of rubber fuel hose. Then routed that wire through the hole where the wire to the voltage regulator used to go through the firewall tin ( Both cars are converted to 12V). For the momentary on switch I attached wire leads with bullet connectors to make it a little easier to work with and a little extra wire to complete circuit to route it under the shift rod in the tunnel. I also used about 15 feet of 14 gauge black wire. It looked like the same stuff the lights had in them.

Road testing it recently and it seems to work good. I was surprised how much light just one reverse light puts out.

Until today we have been enjoying some real terrific weather so Ive been out enjoying the old car every day since Saturday but no today. Saturday was a little wet but not a wash out so we took a trip out to Frog Rock 212 Pomfret Rd (Rt. 44) Eastford Ct.

Speaking of Frog Rock, On Saturday July 23rd, 2016 -The CVA’s 3rd Annual FROG ROCK Gathering from Noon till 3pm, Address: 212 Pomfret Rd (Rt. 44) Eastford Ct. 06242. A social event for all VW’s. Burgers, Hot Dogs, Seafood and Ice Cream available at the food stand. Next we head down the road to the Tri State Cruiser’s Saturday night cruise from 3 till dark at the junction of Rt.169 and Rt. 101, Pomfret Center.
