Since a T4 probably isn't much heavier than a fully loaded T3 camper with only four speeds, it's hard to imagine why the former, with five speeds would place any more stress on a given engine than the latter. I don't recall ever hearing of any catastrophic 1.8t explosions in what must be at least dozens of T3 installs by now. I'm sure the T4 is also way more aerodynamic.

Since that site shows them messing around with both the pan and oil pickup, I'd suggest that those are plausibly the "other factors that caused or contributed"

Just because the vehicle is heavier it doesn't mean you can get more torque or hp out of the engine. Blaming the failed rod on the weight is a fail in itself.

The rods are the weak point in a 1.8T... In a Vanagon you would blow up transmission before you threw a rod, with an O2A different story. A big turbo 1.8T EV would be a blast.
