So you did end up buying the VOLT? now you can be a EV house-hold and still go on vacation. you are definitely putting your money where your mind is _________________ regards

this is cool stuff.................but electric is NOT green or is it zero emissions since you plug it into the electric grid which in peak hrs can be coal fire powered
vw is on the right track in thinking like a train............diesel electric will definately be the future,at 200+ mpg and electric power/torque etc.............the first guy to start building diesel electric kits will be genius/hopefully paid
love what you did,but electric itself without regeneration isnt eco friendly in the least bit _________________ Have a great day! |

while i agree with you on the status of things in the US today, nobody should let themselves be held back by the status quo. I think we might be months away from watching jehu install solar panels, or wind power on the garage
agreed on using diesel instead of gas, seems like a total no-brainer... _________________ regards

In California, there are very very few coal power plants, and they don't put out many megawatts. 341.5 MW to be exact. Overwhelmingly, the electricity is from Natural Gas fired steam turbines or Hydoelectric power. Out of 1143 power plants in CA, only 10 are coal powered. I do know a bit about this, as my company has been buying up Coal plants in the north east to convert to Natural Gas. I think this will get better in the next coming years, as we are proving that running a power plant at peak efficiency uses less fuel, and creates less co2. It is actually in our best interest to create the least amount of CO2 possible, as it is proving to also be the most efficient.
In CA, you have the option of paying more for 100% renewable resource electricity. Contact your local utility company for details, but I know I was able to do so
agreed on a lot of your points though. just like buying a new prius isnt exactly good for the environment, thats a lot of enrgy used to build the car. One reason to do this to an old bus to begin with _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Agree with you gentlemen, but the way i see it, Very smart people have looked at this problem and they have concluded that electric cars are so far more efficient than gas powered cars, that even if you could run them using only the dirtiest grid possible (coal powerplants), its still less co2 on the air.
The most efficient gas cars run on 500 watts per mile while EVs like Model S averages 360 watts per mile. (400wpm on my samba)
http://youtu.be/hf15nMnayXk?t=1m
Of course the grid is not 100% coal anywhere in the planet, and every year there is move toward cleaner, more efficient renewable sources like wind, solar, and not so renewable but cleaner nuclear and natural gas.
There are those who disagree of course and they see this from a different angle, some even claim that EVs run Dirtier than gas cars http://seekingalpha.com/article/1430161-in-summary-the-tesla-model-s-is-a-dirty-car which is the most perverse thing I've heard in a while. _________________ www.jag35.com

EV's still go six times farther on the energy used than internal combustion vehicles, because an electric motor is so much more efficient than an internal combustion engine. The charging can also be done at night when it's cheaper and, if one has solar panels connected to the grid, the electricity can be sold during the daylight hours when it's more expensive. |
