|
|
Hi everyone, I have been following the Samba forums for months.
Thank you so much for your active participation. I bought a 71 Ghia coupe about a year ago and decided to restore it.
I just freshly got the car paintred and now I have to reassemble everything. I took all of the different parts -almost- and sandblasted them, paint and restored them.
When I started to remove the bolts from the emergency brake cables, I accidentally dropped the little mechanism which looks like a small dial or wheel in the tunnel. I have no idea how to retrieve this part.
Any ideas?
I also took a picture of the parts that the painter gave back to me. I have no idea where these parts go, I need your help. (I took pictures of everything prior to disassembling the car and these photos have been deleted accidentally of my phone!)
Sorry if some pictures the lighting is very bad.
thank you |

you can get magnets on a stem for picking up 'lost' parts. There are also some claws worked by a button on a flexible tube.
in the last pic....
left metal horseshoe goes on the steering column on the top of collapsible section outside the fire wall.
the phillips head machine screw look like the size to fit the door striker to the jam. (4 needed per car)
the last 2 parts I don't know. the curved plate looks 'like' a brake line clip but looks a bit short. (4 needed per car) |

the little tin "U" looks like the clip that holds rubber brake line in bracket. ( one of four places.) the 2 screws look like ones that hold door wedge in or the outside mirror fixture. don't know about the other pieces. |

thank you.
So where goes the the horseshoe on the steering column exactly?
Any picture?
I want to refresh the harness. The one i have on the car is old and messy. I do not want to buy a new one because mine is complete. Just need cleaning upgrades and new connectors.
Any suggestions? would you buy every single color of wires like the stock VW harness.

Re the wiring, I'd buy the solid colours, particularly the brown for the VW earth, blue, yellow, red etc, and use black for the various black with coloured stripes. |

Wolfsburg West has the German crimp connectors. I hear there is a special tool also. You may check with them if they have wire and wire loom sleeve |

Follow the headlight wiring from the fuse box down to where it goes through the grommet out to the headlight. Close to where the grommet goes out to the headlight you should see a small hole drilled in the body, that is where you screw the ground wire to the body (both driver and passenger sides). Since your car is freshly painted you may want to ensure that the screw is contacting bare metal when you screw it in.
Great looking ghia by the way. I like that color combination. _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia

A good source for wire , fuse boxes etc....not O.E. ....all aftermarket .
Check out "split loom" in different diameters.
Wire ....use solid color wire and use identifier ..a small piece of colored tape on each end. Or keep track of your colors on a wiring diagram. You won't easily find wire with colored tracers.

you will find matching connectors here (and lots of other stuff)
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php
Unless you are adding new electrical equipment to your Ghia, I'd stick to the stock fusing. It you add something, say heated seats, you would put a fuse in the 'hot' (positive) side of the wiring. |

thank you for your answers.
I'm checking del city website and im sure i will find everything i need.
I didnt find the holes to plug my groung on the side of the headlights. I wonder if the previous owner welded them.
Do you think i can hook on the turn signals brackets -where you screw the turn signals-??
thank you, yes the paint is is a very good job and the cream/black is very unique. |

Could be. You want to use a clean piece of metal (bodywork) for your ground wire. use a wire connector (crimp connector) and attach to a mounting tab on the horn bracket or as I remember, at a relay up front above the horns.
And yes on the colors! |

So I will run the ground wire from one headlight to another and connect it to the horn relay. Sounds clean and easy to do.
Still need to find those headlight buckets grommets before doing anything.. |

I read this and I want to make sure there is no confusion. The holes you are looking for are inside the front "trunk" area of the car. The grommets I'm talking about go from inside the trunk out to the headlights via the wheelwell, they may have been taken off when the car was painted. If you still have your original wiring you will notice that when you run the headlight wiring out to the headlights that the ground wire is really short because it gets grounded right by where the wiring leaves the trunk out to the headlights, at least it is that way on my '69. _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia
