Do I need to be concerned about the back
side of the headlights being exposed? It
just seams to me like it might cause problems
with water/mud splashing all over the back of
the socket/assembly? _________________ SOME MORNINGS IT'S JUST NOT

Probably not a really good idea,. but its not going to keep them from working until corrosion sets in to a point the metal starts corroding really bad.... Liberal coating of dielectric grease would protect them from electrical standpoint...

So, should I try to figure out some way to
close them in? Any suggestions or ideas? _________________ SOME MORNINGS IT'S JUST NOT

Mine were open at the back when I bought my baja in 1999 and are still open. Never had a problem. _________________ Remember, kids------> KCR Transmissions SUCKS |

I use a pair of 1971 Renault R10 headlight assemblies. They have nice steel buckets behind the sealed beams.
The lights are protected from things sliding around inside the trunk.

No, never even thought of it.
Even stock buckets aren't watertight. I never really though it was much of an issue. _________________ Remember, kids------> KCR Transmissions SUCKS |

Empi makes and just about everyone sell a plastic "Baja Headlight Bucket." They are enclosed on the back side. They were installed on my car when I first got it. Both were destroyed in the wreck so I just replaced them with new Empi units. The only issue I've had is it doesn't seem like you can adjust the light down towards the road enough. I'm not sure if it's the buckets, or how my fenders are positioned. I've ended up installing spacers to aim the lights both before and after the wreck.
I think my main concern with an open bucket would be (if the lights are in the fenders) breaking the back of the bulb with a rock from the tire. Other than that a liberal coating of DC4 dielectric grease would keep the contacts operating. |

Yeah, mine are in the fenders.
Rocks flipping up are my biggest concern.
I might just put some heave mesh arcoss the back. _________________ SOME MORNINGS IT'S JUST NOT

Here are the Empi buckets on my car.
If you look closely you can see the spacers I added between the bucket and the fender. The units come with chrome trim rings which I have not mounted with this set. Being that cheap Chinese chrome it will likely rust and pit within a week anyway. The units also come with a short three prong wiring harness, but no bulbs. They are no too expensive either. $25 - $30 each depending on who you get them through
I know a lot of folks around these parts aren't really happy with the quality of Empi parts over the last few years (after seeing the quality of my replacement double tube front bumper, I may be on the way to becoming one of them) at least I was happy enough with my old buckets to replace them with new Empi ones.
Having said that they will now probably fall off, blow up or give me some form of cancer.
Oh well, it's not an endorsement, just an option. |

How about some plastic bowls for 99 cent store...
