The back end sat a bit higher when I took the car apart, but I will look at it again when everything is back in place with full weights. Thanks for that link! _________________ My 1973 Standard Beetle Build SOLD

Odds and ends sort of work.
Brake reservoir and feed lines installed.
Rear license cover and bracket in place, new seal and license lamp too.
Started getting organized on the wiring. I've built harnesses from scratch before but I thought the Wiring Works harness was more cost effective in regards to my time. I will be adding some additional circuits and relays depending on what I decide to add into the electrical system.
I had kept and labeled everything from the original electrical harness, plus I have pics and notes, so I'm not too worried about the new stuff.

Thanks all,
Pete, I love that color combo you've got, and your posting pics helps me tremendously.
Started laying out some wiring - I like to intially get it generally in place, then come back and see where I need to tighten things up.
Got the end plugs on the MC connectors, had to get new boots but re-used the plastic connectors. Not shown but I also use 3M fabric tape, same as what OEM's use to wrap harness joints and ends at connectors.

I'm going with H4 headlights, so I bought a set of Hella-Mexico lamp assemblies from WW. Same tri-connector set-up as the OEM sealed beams. I will be adding a dual relay setup to feed the lights so the switch simply energizes the relays.
I had mentioned plugs before, here's an example of the closed grommets that I get from McMaster-Carr, I've got them in most common sizes. This was part #9750K31.
Here are plugs installed into the holes for ac lines.
While I was at it, I also picked up nylon vaccum-rated, fuel resistant tubing from McMaster, same dimensions as original, reasonable cost for a 25 ft roll. Part #5173K89. I'll get same stuff for the slightly larger diameter sections of the evap system.

I've got the same lights but in RHD and they are very impressive with 100/90w globes in them. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

For reference, here's the wheels that have been on the car for the last 20 years or so, as you can see they pretty much filled out the fenderwells, never had any rub issues with them, but I plan to go with smaller tire than that 205/75/15. I always thought they were just a bit too big.

Really nice build, I've been following the progress and can't wait to see the finished car!
Love the new wheels! I'm in Houston and may be interested in buying the old wheels if you're interested in selling and still have them.
Keep posting! Nice work. |

I thought the Mexican Hella quality was decent, certainly much better than the bargain basement versions I've ready about. We'll see, but this gets me down the road a bit.
Her74, I can do that. I'm using them as roll-arounds for the time being but I was planning to sell them. Tires are toast but the rims/caps are in nice shape. _________________ My 1973 Standard Beetle Build SOLD

They are, Look at the LENS, you will notice it says "Made In Germany" The lens is made there, the rest is Hella of Mexico.
Here are my 100% German units, (back reflector is German) and so is the Front glass.
Your Mexican ones should have the same German glass as mine.

Got the wiper stuff cleaned up and back into the car.
Original didn't look terrible.
Pulled the pivots apart, they were a bit gunky.
Cleaned up the contacts and greased the wiper gearset.
All cleaned up.

Got the front headlights in place, I'll wait to install the trim rings for now.
These were the H4 conversion set, bolted right in and use the same connector as the sealed beam. As I've mentioned, I'll power them through separate relays (hi/lo).
Got the front turns connected up as well. They're going to need new lenses.

I had started on the tailights a few days ago but noticed that this type of seal really wasn't going to work very well.
So I bought the right one for the base plate.
Got the lights in place (I hope I got right and left correct)
All these lights going back on start to make it look buggy again lol. _________________ My 1973 Standard Beetle Build SOLD

Few more items.
Got the expansion tank in place, most of the front end wiring is there now, I'll tighten it up after the gas tank is back in.
Starting to slowly fill up the area behind the dash. There's going to be stop and start as getting one thing done leads me to something else. Example is I need to install the speedo, but first want to disassemble, clean up, and add the foil strips for better lighting, so it's a bit back and forth now going forward.
I was looking at the fuseblock and looks like it's easy to include a couple more relays for the high and low beams. I'll cut the tabs off of the new relays before I install. I'll probably add a small connection block for additional relays as well so I can route a second battery feed up to the front as well as to the back area. All feeds from the battery will route through a main circuit breaker at the battery.
