Got the fenders and hood mounted. I put some temporary fender beading in. The black beading and black running boards are just not doing it for me. I am sending them out to have them professionally colored. Also mounted the rear decklid but it's not the one I am running, I have a vert lid that still needs to be painted, when thats done I will swap them out.

What color are you changing them to?

I did a spray out card for the interior shop so they could color match them to the car. I already got them lighter than the body color but did not like them, so I am thinking of trying the same color as body color but in a satin finish, then if I don't like that I am going to a slightly darker color than body color. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Well I have not worked much on the 61 the past few months due to it being the busy season at work. I did get some parts painted today.
That is pretty much the last of it. I'll start making the pan a roller. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Well been slow going these past few months but my Dad came into town and we got a few things done on the pan.
Started out by installing one piece axle boots.
As I assembled the tranny Dad tackled the installation of the brass shift rod bushing.
that thing was a nightmare to install.
I also cleaned all the rust off of the shift rod while it was out.
got all the solid mounts installed..
I still have a torque/kafer bar to install but it will go on after the body has been mated.
The spring plates gave us hell to get on correctly. We started out by fabbing our own loader tool. Jeremy, Dad, and I spent about an hour making this beauty..
It worked like a charm and only cost me 11 bucks.
new brakes installed out back..
Front leaf springs narrowed and dimpled
checked shocks to make sure they cleared everything
Ryan and I went in halves on a reamer for the delrin bushings.
I ran into a major issue when installing my new german king pins into the new set of Airkewld dropped spindles. The hole was way undersized and egg shaped.
I stopped by Joe's shop and he honed them to proper spec.
but I lost one of the thrust washers and I am stalled until I get one.
Started the plumbing on the brake lines,
I'll post another update soon. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Very nice work. Are you running Socal rear shocks? I'm running them and I really like them. They look good too. _________________ 71 Type 1302 Custom

I had planned on it but I was not sure what size to order for the rear, what size did you order? _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Got my kingpins in and have started on the front beam. I didn't catch that I had an early and a late control arm. I had two sets and didn't pay attention, I just picked out the best four. So I had to take care of that. Joe gave me an extra set of carriers so I was able to replace the carrier that got messed up due to the new dropped spindles being undersized and egged.

finished installing the driver side brakes before I called it a night..

Love your attention to detail, the build is awesome. Reassembling the car without scratching anything with hand tools, etc. will truly be a challenge, so stay focused!
I know your checkbook must be on fire at this point. Have you entertained restoring a tired late 60's or early 70's air-cooled Porsche 911 to this level of detail in the future? You would do well financially if you flipped one, air-cooled 911's are fetching top dollar.
Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see it finished. _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |

Wow, loving the attention to detail. I can't wait to see more updates on this build. Really looking forward to seeing the final product in person in the near future. Quality workmanship at its finest. |
