I have been slightly stalled here lately, I had to get through the holidays with all the family stuff I really did not have time. I also went a different route on the wheels. I sent a set of SA Sprint Stars out to California and had them chromed and re-hooped and then I detailed them. I also had a few things made. Maybe if I stop changing my mind and adding stuff I could get the project moving faster. Here is a few pictures...
4.5 fronts and 6 in the rear:
here are some of the things I had fab'd
I still have a tone of stuff to paint including all the panels I had made. My chassis is almost finished I had to switch out the front studs on my brakes from 12mm to 14mm. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Did those SA Sprint Stars come in 4.5's and 6's or did you have to customize them to your liking? |

I had the rears widened to 6", the set was 4.5 to begin with. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Well it has been awhile since my last update, soooooo here goes.......
A lot has gone on since my last update. Due to a color match issue on a few main parts from using paint that was over two years old I decided to repaint. Due to the huge amount of clear and being worried about having to much material on the car I spent a couple of weeks sanding. I started with 320 on a DA, (I wet sanded to keep the dust down in the garage) then went to 400 and 600. Then I hand blocked each panel with 600. I then loaded it up in Jason's trailer and took it back out to the shop and Jeremy re-shot the entire car.
Here is a shot of the issue with the driver door. In the beginning it had a small blemish about the size of an eraser head, Most people would not have even noticed, but I decided to respray, without even thinking the age of the paint, not to mention the other 10K scenarios that effect color such as temperature and humidity levels.
We did try and have it color matched but each time the color was either to light or to dark.
So I went to town on the sanding
Now it is back in the garage once again and the assembly has started.

I used an SEM product and colored matched my running boards and fender beading to match the paint. I think it turned out killer, and I like that it has a satin finish, so it doesn't look like I just painted it when I painted the car.
I also used it on the pinch welt around the pop outs
and the running boards....
Installed my NOS trip speedo

You are not kidding. It took me some time to decide to go that route, I just knew I was not going to be satisfied with a blended match _________________ Ethan Dunlap

I wondered about that myself I figured since I have the original box with the receipt taped on it that it must have been from testing, at least I guess.

I got my fast fab gauge holder installed. I wasn't impressed with the size of the trim compared to the original.
So I thought long and hard what to do about it. It is not even close to matching. When you take them off it has two holes for the mounting screw. I really didn't want to fill the holes and repaint so I decided to take them off and run the LED for my line lock and shift light in the holes. I was going to put them in the grill behind the mesh so that they wouldn't be seen. I can live with it. I like the lights sticking out way better than the trim.
I got my wing windows installed as well as the windshield. I would have installed the back window as well, but it has way to many scratches. I thought I could fix them so I ordered a scratch repair kit from Eastwood. It didn't work, in fact I made it worse.
I also color matched my headlight buckets
and I rebuilt my wiper motor. I dropped in a 12 volt armature and removed all the old grease from the gears and repacked it.
I installed the main wire harness, so I will be working on that and building the doors the rest of this week. That pretty much brings things up to date. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Love the gauges and modification you did instead of trim. Much cleaner. Great work! |

Nice, the car is coming out great. Looks like the car might be making an appearance at the Texas VW Classic this year. |

Thanks everyone for the encouraging comments.
I got a few more things done today.
All that is left on the doors is the vapor barrier and Thanks to Jeremy and Jason I got some time in the booth.
Engine bay tin painted
We also got some of the accent color sprayed. This color was matched to my door panels and seat covers. We actually sprayed Flat Clear but in these pictures it is right after the last coat so they seem a little glossy but that will die down. I will try and get better pictures tomorrow.
