Well Operation Pan Replacement was a go for today. It started off with Eliot and I cutting out the old pans. Then Miguel was rolling on media blasting the backbone when mother nature decided that we needed tons of rain, so the media blasting will have to be done next weekend. The fitment of the new Wolfsberg West pans went smoothly. We started by measuring the exact placement of each pan bolt hole, then we ground the ledge and Miguel was able to hit all the hard to get to corners with the media, then using a hole punch we punched holes every inch on the new pans, and we welded them in . Jeremy and Eliot also shaved the bump stops off the rear and shaved them to a pleasing form. We also shaved the heater control knob. I will say this..... the cheap harbor freight hole punch really sucks for pans we had issues getting the weld to penetrate the tunnel before it closed our holes.
Thanks for the help today Jason, Jeremy, Eliot, and Miguel.
Here are some pic's enjoy....

Got a little more done today....Well as some of you may know a 61 has an unusual tank in that it does not have a hole for the sending unit, although the pressing is there. Now here in the US we refer to these as 61 one year only tanks, but world wide they came like that up to 67 I believe in the standard models. Well I scored one just about a year ago and it sat in our office unopened for about 6 months until the wife got tired of moving it around and took it to the garage. I finally opened it today and at first sight I thought to myself this don't look good. Well I unpacked it and got a flashlight out and peered inside as far as I could see and I was pleasantly amazed at how nice it actually was. It had its share of patina on the outside but it was very nice on the inside. There was also a big bonus item inside it had one of the electric sending units that are a little hard to find. Now I am not sure if it works or not but I do plan to look a little further into it because it is rather a neat option. Well moving a long, a big thanks goes out to Miguel he spent the better part of the day behind the blaster

Here is the sending unit

Are you going to use a stock fuel pump? If you're going to use something other than stock, I would suggest ripping the original fuel line out and installing a 3/8th through the tunnel...

No I won't be using a stock pump, so I will be replacing the the fuel line, just have not got to that point yet. I would like to install AN fitting on both end, just not sure on the location as of yet.

Shoot I am jealous as well, not mine. That's my buddy's shop I bartered a few years ago on my paint job. I poured all the concrete for his shop at cost, and he lets me work on my car on the weekends. If it wasn't for him and his brother Jeremy I wouldn't be able to afford such a nice paint job. The pan will be mostly gloss black with the tunnel being finished out in body color, I am thinking about not running anything on the tunnel but paint.

sand...sand....and more sanding. It doesn't seem like much was accomplished but I blocked the tank and decklid today and Jeremy sprayed another coat of primer after I fixed a couple of areas that needed some help. I am still not 100% happy with the tank so it will take another session. This is the stage that fills like it moves at a snails pace but I am having a blast so I don't plan to rush anything at this point.

I sprayed a guide coat and got after it.

Not much of an update from the past two weeks, but here goes.

Still working on the tank and the pan. I am pretty much at a stand still parts wise, between the tranny for the wife's truck and then I had to buy 6 new tires for my F350 I am pretty much tapped out on extra funds. Not to mention the holidays are upon us and that means I am going into my slow season. So when Jeremy asked me why I was blocking my pan and fixing the little things no one will ever see, I merely stated... why not I have nothing else to really work on until I get a little extra funds to spend on brakes, spring plates ect. So I should have a really bitching pan in the weeks to come. I didn't take many photos due to the fact that there is not much to see, but here are a few:

I fixed a few dents on the frame horns probably made by a jack, also on the pans on both sides there where dents from spot welding the seat tracks on. Im sure you cant tell much in the pictures. Then it got a final coat of primer.

A little side project I have been working on was to repair the sending unit that was in the tank. After a lot of studying online I figured out how to test the unit, found it not to be working. That was a bummer so then I dug a little further and learned how these things work, I was able to open it up and found that it was indeed worn out. That still did not stop me, after a few hours of tinkering with it I managed to get it to function properly. Now the down fall. Through my research I found that you have to match the gauge to the ohm range that the sending unit puts out. Well no dice there.Once again I did not let that stop me, I began researching gauges and sending units. I had already decided that I wanted to run the gauges like Kewsi used in his oval. Mainly because they have a more vintage look to them, the only thing I do not like about them is the red pointer, I am hoping I can get the bezel off to do a color change. That gauge runs in the 0-90 ohm range. So I then found a sending unit that operates in that range and fitted it to the bracket that goes into the tank. All that is left to do is to shorten the plunger. I figured I would wait for that once I install the tank, so that I do not cut it too short. Here is what I ended up with.

and this is the gauge I have coming. I plan on using the fast fab gauge plate that fits into the stock radio hole.

Gonna be pretty cool to have a fuel gauge in the 61 and not have to switch to a later tank. Speaking of the tank I did get it into final primer as well. I am pretty happy with it. It has eaten so much of my time but end the end it is worth it and I had fun.

Yep I liked how they look in your car. I want to change the pointer to an off white or white though, not digging the bright red
