I have to do some fiberglass repairs to my buggy body.
I have a few holes about 1 inch in diameter on the side wall of the body. I`m not sure if I should tackle the repair on the inside (smooth surface) or on the outside of the body (rough surface)?
You will be able to see both sides, I`m hoping the repair does not to show.
Does anybody have any Idea?
Thank you. |

I generally tackle it from both sides..... I usually feather edge hole about an inch plus all around it (exposes virgin material) on both sides and from front side tape across hole with masking tape... Do first layup of resin and cloth (mat) on back side using tape to keep materials in place, this gives a base for next step.... Once first layup is cured (back side), I go to front side and remove tape, do additional layup with resin/mat/clots till patch is about even or slightly above surrounding surface and grind/sand it down to height/contour of surrounding glass.... I always try to bring resin/glass to surrounding shape and do NOT rely on "fillers" to fill large voids... I have noticed of over time "some" fillers (Bondo) will shrink and will leave a dimple under your final color coat.. Sometimes it may take a year or two for it to show up....
Remember excessive material on repair can always be removed (sand/grind) but its a pain to keep adding material to get repair even with surrounding surface... Be generous with your repair... IF both sides of repair are visible you just have to work them both to get "finish" you are happy with.... There is no magic bullet here...
