I was thinking about how much I love my first generation 4runner with the seemingly indestructible 22RE that I can take anywhere, but love my vanagon that is so cozy to camp in. I started wondering if anyone has grafted a vanagon body to a Toyota 4x4 chasis. Found this:
Looks like a fun project.

Kick a Syncro's butt maybe but won't hold resale value like a Syncro. Reminds me of the old drop a Corvette onto a Blazer chassis trick.........destroy 2 vehicles in one DIFFICULT act. |

Anyone remember the 4-runner (with the baby strapped in the back) at mogfest a year ago that schooled EVERYONE in the deapl end of the pit? Went straight through a mud hole that at least a dozen rigs of all sizes and shapes got pulled out of. _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

What's a 4Runner doing in the pit at MogFest? I've never been there, but got the clear impression that only European makes are allowed to drive there?

Not sure what the connection is but he's there a lot. Pretty tricked out old style (convertible) 4-runner. Always had his baby strapped in the middle of the back seat. Schooled a lot of people for sure! Fun to watch except when cringing about the baby. _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

Heh - I'm getting a visual of the baby getting an E ticket ride. Those older 4Runners were considered the high water mark by many because they were the only solid axle models IIRC. So you had the solid front axle, and EFI 22RE engine and pickup bed functionality with removable fiberglas top and a pair of seatbelted seats in the bed as well. Really versatile vehicle.
The above pictures make me wish the owner had done a better job of keeping more of the iconic Vanagon's face. I can see it was not possible with the radiator half a foot out in front of the headlights, but I think I'd have tried. Maybe they will weld some of back on at the end - who knows? In that respect, the mentioned Splitzgauer is doing an amazing job of maintaining the looks of the body. Can't wait to see that thing all done - what a hoot!

As stated elsewhere: recycling a junk van into something useful again is not a bad thing.
Also, some people enjoy the process far more than the end product.
Let them have their fun... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

It’s an impressive build, aLot of time and effort going on there. Keep the pictures coming. I would like to see how the front end is finished.
P.S. The hump in the front cab would make a great drink holder.. |

It will have way more style anyway. I have friends that wheel Toyotas. It is pretty amazing where they can go. Like many other hobbies, It takes lots of time and money.
Here is a picture from a while ago..

Can't wait to see what you come up with for bumpers. Secretly, I hope you try to make them super stout versions of the stock bumpers just because the more bus cues it has the more brilliant the whole thing looks. Not that you know jack about bumpers, tho.......
