hello people of the samba. after lurking around here for ages, thought i'd show off my bug. so after being without wheels since my bike accident in march 2012, i've been saving and hunting for a beetle. Finally found one i liked and spent the better part of 10 weeks trying to organise the papers for it (big headaches in SA if u dont have the registered owners details) and to sort out a little issue caused by some rats deciding that the wiring looked yummy... Shocked

Went to collect her mid-August, and i can say that i'm a happy camper... there are some small things that need attention before i can get her roadworthied and licensed, mainly some new headlights (missing adjuster screws), a new hooter that mysteriously stopped working, an oil leak, and the brakes dont feel 100%.
but she starts 1st swing, only rust is a few specs on the roof, pan has been sandblasted and rubberised about 2 years ago, body was resprayed from a pale blue to a metallic blue. its not the best paint job but it'll do. also i'm told the motor (1600TP) has had an overhaul and the brakes are fairly new too.

interior is neat, the vinyl/cloth seats have no tears, same story with the door panels (although they need new retaining clips), headlining is good, newish carpets, no rust under the battery, and a radio hidden in the cubby...

opinions and constructive crit please...

one thing i still have to fix, theres quite a bad oil leak, coming from the pushrod tube seals on the right and tappet cover on the left. i'm told i can get away with just new gaskets and that once the head is off the tube seals are an easy fix. will eventually get those fancy spring loaded ones from volkspares when i have more cash...

then on to the one dodgy headlight and the fact that i cant adjust either of them. i got hold of a pair of Hella CitiGolf lights later on and after a bit of a mission to fit them, they went in and work a treat.

and last but not least, i want to adjust the drums as the right rear is binding when the brakes warm up.

bug is parked at my moms place cos my complex's rules say i cant fiddle and fix there... Rolling Eyes
so after fitting a new 2nd hand coil and going thru a few new and used condensers, the misfire is finally gone! starts on the 1st swing, even after standing for a while. idles nice, no heavy petrol smell, no more cutting out etc. but as it seems lady luck is against me, i have new issues. whenever put under load (hard acceleration or more than +-30% throttle) it hesitates and stumbles and stutters along. go back to cruising throttle opening and she's golden again. feels like fuel starvation (maybe accelerator pump, maybe needle+seat), but i havent changed anything WRT to fuelling so could possibly be i havent set the timing 100% :zhelp: Question

also finally got round to fitting new headlights. OE Hella Citi lights that take H4 bulbs, cost me very little thanks to some staff discount. went and bought a bag of various sizes of nuts/bolts/washers/self-tappers/etc to fit as well. bit of a mission getting the 4mm self-tappers to work but they're in and tight and the front is looking good again. also had to run a new earth wire for the right headlight but thankfully thats a small job. on recommendation from an old timer i know, i used some toothpaste to polish up the headlight trim rings and it actually got most of the minor scratches out Very Happy

lastly i got some new stickers from the guys at http://www.stickermuch.com so put those on too.

some random pics, thanks for looking...

Question Rolling Eyes thats 4 or 5 in 2 months...

right, 1st off i figured out the condenser problem, 2 inches of wire with far too much resistance that was stuffing everything around. put some nice new wires and all's well.

then one night while visiting my parents, there was a loud bang from the right rear wheel and the brakes locked. when i got a chance i stripped everything and heres what i found

after much swearing to get the 36mm nut off the drums (nearly 300nm torques spec and some old age) and lots of hammering to get the stuck drum off, i succeeded. turns out the last time the bug had brakes done they used cheap shite. the friction material had come loose off the backing plate and got jammed in the works. went and got a new set of shoes and fitted and cleaned alas, then ran out of daylight so i kinda dont have a working handbrake for now Embarassed

anyways heres the old kak bit

news from the past weekend, positice battery terminal worked its way loose so come thursday she wouldnt start. blame comes down to some el-cheapo looking post clamps. anyways, battery wasnt terribly flat so i jumped it and went for a long drive. when i get chance i will take the battery out and give it a proper charge.

also, i finally got a chance to put some real speakers in. car came with a basic pioneer CD f/loader and some 160w (i think) 6x9's. still had all my Golfs sound gathering dust, so in went a set of 480w 4 way Pioneer 6x9's, a 12 inch Pioneer sub, and a US audio amp (not sure on the power cos its an old handmedown and the numberings a bit faded), and a Pioneer deck with all sorts of settings on it so no real need for a cross-over just yet.

car sounds fairly decent, just needs some fine tuning til i'm totally happy :hangloose:  only thing left to do is sort out the decks power wire, as at the moment both the memory wire and the 12v are connected to the same ignition 12v wire. so i need to add a wire to permanent 12v so the radio remembers its settings, and i prefer to have the radio's power connected to permanent 12v too, so i dont have to have the ignition on to listen.

tiny bit of bad news is i'm starting to see more and more how the PO who rebuilt it cut corners here there and everywhere Mad Sad the wiring is a mess (in the process of tidying), i need a new battery clamp, he used cheap-ass mdf for the rear shelf-box-thing that holds the 6x9's and theres water getting in around the rear window somewhere which is soaking into the box (will make a full proper setup when i have time), crappy glue to hold down the carpets, over-spray on almost all the rubbers/grommets/etc Shocked the cubby is in a terrible state, paint peeling in lots of hidden spots around the frunk and engine (revealing the quite pleasant original turquoise) Shocked Evil or Very Mad

all in all i'm a happy chappy, nice to get to work hassle free and have some good (and loud) tunes to keep me smilng. Cool

immediate to do list goes as follows
1. move RCA's further from the amps power cords to get rid of some whine
2. add in the decks extra wires
3. have a slow puncture looked at
4. wash and polish
5. get out to some shows and park-offs Very Happy
