I guessed 75% in the past. Then the total survivors is about 1200 and the total production is about 120,000 so about 1 in 100 barndoors survived on average. Kind of puts it in perspective.

I'm interested in others opinions on this question.

I don't think that percentage is true at all. Of course a lot of collectors like us have their vehicles registered, but when I look at the percentage of BDs I know locally, that are not registered yet , then what is still found in the woods and if you think about Southern American vehicles and projects and VIN chassis people have lying around, I guess there are still 5000 or even many more existent ! Still not many if you consider the Transporter loving crowd around the world. Cool
Anyways, great Job from Tonny to keep all this collected.

5000 wow that sounds like a lot all I know is those damn things are so hard to find I would have to say for anyone that likes to hunt for buses the ultimate goal would be to find a 23 window barndoor I have talk to a few Veterans bus hunters and they tell me in the early 80' they were out there to be found but if there a rusty they were probably cut up for parts no one would of ever predicted the value of them today ... someday I'm gonna buy myself a DeLorean and go back to the future and go to all the scrap yards and save them..

I agree - I think it is double too.

Maybe triple for Single Cabs - it seems like more trucks are always being found.

I agree. I have seen 16" wheels in an everyday business wrecking yard just a few years ago, getting scrapped. this happens everyday probably, around the world. with 120.000BDs, there's more than half a million wheels out there to get scrapped finally Laughing
Stacks of parts are probably hidden in sheds among other useless (to us) trash, and when their owners pass away, will get scrapped. Nothing we can do about that. In the end, in decades and centuries to come, most of our now beloved and restored vans will crumble to dust again too Crying or Very sad Wink Nothing is forever, but for now I prefer to enjoy what is here.

Following the news that 20-01880 is now in the ownership of VW, I've been wondering what's next for Mr Barndoor?

Tonny's panel is just awesome !!!!
no matter what they're trying, VW will never be able to recreate anything like it.
