I have a 67 just recently restored. We put in a rebuilt engine. Drove it around a bit then took out the engine and replaced the transmission mounts. We didn't notice they were worn out. Yes, we were out of sequence, kinda learn as we go. Well now it pops out of reverse. Did those mounts have anything to do with this? Also, the shift lever vibrates and rattles, so I looked in the tunnel and there is no shift rod bushing. Could any of this be the cause of the reverse pop out problem? I sure don't want to have to rebuild the transmission. I plan to replace the bushing this weekend. Anything else I should do while I have this apart. Is there a bushing on the other end under the back seat? Thanks

Yes, replacing the mounts and getting them tight can change shifter position, so if the shifter is now out of adjustment, it may not be engaging fully...

Replace the shift tube bushing. Be sure you have the retaining spring ring, it will most lilkey be hanging on the shaft so keep an eye out for it as you remove the shift tube. Adjust the shifter when finished.

Well I replaced the bushing today and what a difference that makes. So smooth. But it still pops out of reverse. Sad

Loosen the bolts a bit and try moving the shifter base a little to the front of the Beetle. Retighten the bolts and see if it stays in gear.
