|
|
I am still here and hard at it. My lock has been broken for 20 years. It has been using the inner door frame to bear against and caused it to crack. I finally got around to replacing the lock and welding the frame today. I spend most of my time these days slinging mud and sanding. And sanding...
And sanding...
And sanding...

Oh. and this. De-Bugified rear apron.
For those that don't know this is common to cut out the rear apron for two pea shooters so a bug muffler can be used. I returned mine to the stock single cutout. I wonder what the guy that cut it out would think about the time I spent undoing his "improvement". I also have the matching bumper with two holes cut in it.

nice work. This has to be done to many bugs as well, the early ovals had aprons without cutouts, which were later "improved"....
I myself like the clean look of the 55-59 apron without cutouts _________________ regards

I absolutely love this thread, however the rapid progression will soon leave us without a constantly updating thread....a sad day that will be. Keep up the great work!

Amazing work mister! I noticed you didn't fix the broken tab that helps keep the opener rod steady in the door, sloppy man sloppy!

If you're taking votes, option 'B' looks better IMHO

Kurt has a 63 Gypsy Freeway Traveler I sold him, a few months ago, for an up coming project. If he is feeling kind and if asked nicely he might show a few pictures of this future project. Lots of welding !!!!! I told him its not a project for the faint of heart. He said he missed welding and was up for the challenge, and I knew he was the guy. |

Option B looks cleaner and angles the belt more accurately.
Shame you can't mount the retractor on the back wall. |

And more sanding...
Yes I looked very hard at putting the retractor on the back wall. There must not be any twist in the belt for it to function the way it was designed. Fixed 3 point belts are too restricting. Without the retractor the passenger belt is often left hanging outside and not noticed until at freeway speeds. I can hear it banning against the paint. And that continues until the next exit. I will put them where they will function best and be in plain sight. Seat belts are not stock on this truck anyway. It might keep me from bumping my head at a low speed crash but I might as well be riding a motorcycle for all the protection A VW bus will give me on the freeway.
"I love the smell of primer in the morning" Until I take off my respirator. Then I run for the door.
Even a single cab still has 5 doors to deal with.
Evercoat Super Build 4 to 1 Polyester Primer is by far my favorite. I had too much spray texture today so I upped the pressure at the gun and switched from 2.2mm to a 1.8 mm tip. What a difference. The stuff lays out smooth. Last time I painted a bus was over 20 years ago. I have to keep reminding myself to get closer with these new HVLP guns. 4 to 6 inches seems to work best. There is a lot less overspray than I remember with the old cup gun.
Back to sanding...

Remind me what paint you put on after you've got bare metal ready for your first layer, please.
I feel for your sanding. You leave a little of your life in all work, I think. |

And sanding...
Sure but remember this is only my second attempt at painting a car. I use self etching primer if I will be doing any work on that area at a later date because it is easy to wash off and epoxy if the area is ready for the high build within the recoat window of one to two days.
I Afterblast phosphoric treat bare metal before any coat. Even filler.
There are a lot more reasons to use one over the other or the other over the one but that is my quickest answer.
Want sanding video?

I could not sand it anymore. I have to take a break. How about some welding?
I welded the big nuts to 1/4 inch plate.
Marked out where to drill and cut.
I put a screw and safety wired it so it will not fall into the hole.
I bolted the cutout piece to the 1/4" plate and safety wired it too.
Magnets hold it all in place for tacking.
Welding sheet metal is easy when you have a big chunk of steel to back it up.
Test fit before skim coat.
I am happy to have this done. I don't have to think about how I am going to do that anymore.
Back to sanding...
Video is on youtube. Don't look. It's magic.
Kurt
Added this photo tonight. I made the front center seat belt mounting strap out of 1/4" bar. I will weld it in tomorrow.
I know. I am avoiding sanding... _________________ "The more I get done the less it looks like I did anything"

Neat.
Did you have a schematic for that part, or just go from the picture in the technical bulletin? Am thinking about getting the same made up by a local metalworker, but all I can find are the photos from the technical bulletin in the archives here.
Are you making the reinforcement thingy that transfers the load through to the seat 'pedestal' belt mountings as well, or have you installed that under the wheel well to bolt straight through? |
