And more sanding...

I tried to practice guitar today. No go. There is no skin left on my finger tips.

Just when I think there is no interest somebody asks for details. Excellent!

I made a strip of cardboard and bent it to fit. The angled part ends up being close to 45 degrees. Early floors have a different rib pattern so the factory retrofit kit won't fit well.
(edit) Turns out there was an early floor pattern retrofit kit as well.

My belts bolt through the floor into the bar below. I don't understand why VW's kit has such a complicated arrangement for this. Perhaps they don't want the spare tire to rub on them? My spare is in the treasure chest now.

The 45 degree bend was too difficult to do cleanly. I resorted to making a saw cut halfway through, make the bend and weld back up. That worked so well I made those half cuts for all the bends. This allowed me to bend everything to fit into shape on the truck easily; then weld it up rigid. I would not have attempted those little "z" bends without a relief cut in such thick steel. They are for clearing the floor ribs.

Don't look at this video if you believe in "magic"

Thanks Kurt, your pictures help a lot. The images in the technical bulletin were too dark to see the bends in the bracket.

I wonder if the original kit was designed to stop the spare wheel from pinning the belt down? If you adjusted the belt to fit your waist while the wheel was holding the belt down, then in an accident the sharp pull on the belt could lift the wheel and you'd have slack?

I can see you've sanded your fingers to the bone, but if you get a chance, could you see whether the wheel does hold the belt down? If it doesn't, I may just get someone to make the bracket that you've made. It does seem like a much simpler solution.

BTW, your thread is inspirational. Really well done. I'll be referring back to your hinge repairs some day. My decklid and treasure chest hinges have been welded in place by a previous owner.

Cheers

Andy

Most of the screws are broken off in their holes. Somebody drilled them out badly and used sheet metal screws that messed everything up. The new vent cover does not line up with the messed up holes. I am gonna have to fix this. They should be machine screws.

I believe in "magic"... and in Kurt! Thanks for another great video (on sanding magic) and the music was fun too. This is an amazing thread! As always, I'm enjoying it immensely!

Kurt I drove my house nuts the other night because I had your soundtrack stuck in my head. You are both hilarious and a genius! Thanks for taking the time to compile and edit hours of video just for our pleasure. So cool!

I am trying to stay focused on getting everything ready for paint. This problem is in my way. Those broken screws and miss-drilled holes were bumming me out. They are hardened screws. Lots of broken drill bits. I could not drill them out. Too small to weld. I considered welding blobs of metal in there and re-drilling. I would be trying to thread through those hardened screws. I was screwed. I was stumped and went to bed.

Like so many things that look better in the morning with a fresh start. All I needed to do was get off the computer and get back out in the garage and just DO IT.

I drilled out the spot welds and ripped out the offending nut plates. I found some thick sheet metal and laid out the pattern.

Why is it that I have to fix EVERYTHING on this truck?

What is this and where can I get some? Looks way, way easier to apply than a spray guide coat.

Guide coat powder. It seems expensive but this is way better than "wet"

Judging by the high standard you've been holding yourself to, I'm sure you're going to take care of that rust inside the vent, but such a seemingly tricky location makes me wonder how, y'know? Nice job on the new nut-plates BTW! Cool

If you don't, who will?

YOU will. Not your best friend, not your SO, not family, not anyone you hire. It's YOU who will fix it.

Home stretch man, you got this!!
(I know you were asking more about all the problems on these old VW's, but I just wanted to give you a motivational thumbs up!)

The short answer is 240 volt 80 gallon 5 horse from Lowes. That is much more than I need for painting but is a minimum for sand blasting.

The longer answer will probably be a video about my system as it has a fan cooled radiator and a refrigeration unit on a second 60 gallon tank for dry air. This was not my first compressor.

4x.7mm Mine are unnecessarily long as you can see. I will be using anti seize compound on the threads to prevent them getting stuck again.

To answer the other question, I will use Afterblast to convert the surface rust then use internal frame coating.

More sanding...

Kurt awesome work!
I had a different problem than you, I heated up each bolt with map gas and my nut plates are good after running a tap through them. My issue is my flap is completely seized. Did you disassemble that? If so, how? I am afraid to break anything.

Great pic by the way, its a nice ghost image of you reflecting on your own work. OR, you are covered in so much filler dust thats actually how you look now. Laughing
