I've been on this site since 2004. There has NEVER been a restoration thread that even came close to this one. Kurt has set the bar so high, I don't think anyone (besides him) will ever come close again.
Kurt, I'm so in awe on your tireless energy that you demonstrate. I often wonder, does this guy ever sleep? Does he know how to relax and enjoy "down time"? I bet he doesn't own a TV.
Thanks again for sharing and documenting this amazing journey of your restoration of this very lucky PU. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

When the video was first playing, I was like "Damn WTF, no music?!!" and then the song started playing and I literally laughed out loud!! It's perfect!
Bravo!!
Did you sand at all in between coats or just flash and spray? _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

My wife insisted that I video this painting. I had not been doing that. Paint would get all over my camera so I used a Gopro with a waterproof case that could be cleaned this time. We can thank her for that video and the music selection.
Answers to questions:
I use black sealer for several reasons. Red paint is rather transparent. It is made with a clear base. Black sealer gives a deep solid look. When approaching a burn through it will get darker not lighter or pink. The stock primer used by VW on this truck was black.
No sanding between coats of color. The four coats are bonded together within the recoat window. Color sanding and polishing will be done a week or more later.
Someone asked me why I am doing this project. Aren’t I spending more money than it will be worth? It is true. The cheapest way to have a restored car is to buy one already done. My answer is something like this proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. I built a garage, bought the tools and materials and learned how to do this. I have great new friends now and the experiences and enjoyment of this project are priceless. Thank you all for your encouragement.

Thanks Kurt. For this entire thread, and for your attitude towards the project. It is appreciated more than you may know.

Check out that red wagen!
It's got to be so satisfying to get the color laid on. I love how perfect the reflection is as you pass by the areas you formally recreated especially right in front of the left rear wheel-well where you did the shrinking and such.
As you move around the job spraying, do you have flashbacks of the multitude of tribulations of that area you just covered up with gloss? Or do you flash on something that was going through your head or a song that was playing during a certain instant of time?
Did you get fumed out? |
