All mine have broke here.
I put criss-cross clamps to hold mine. Pic of bracket you made? I've never had a tube wear through although it sure seems possible where it curves. |

Here is the picture you requested.
Years ago when I did not weld very well I had a muffler shop
weld this bracket on to the torsion housing to repair my lose clutch cable tube.
Before and after. Can you believe this is the same truck?
I am slowly gaining control!
Welcome to 1959. There are many differences from other years. There are choke and fuel tap controls under the seat. The shifter is straight. Unique to this year +/- is the small steering shaft hole combined with the more rearward positioned hand controls.
What will I get done today?

|
|
I had been putting off the inevitable. Sooner or later I was going to have to clean those greasy parts. When I started I did not want to touch them because I would get dirty. Now I don't want to touch them because I will get them dirty.
Do they always end up looking like this?
Cleaned with Purple Power and a brush.
I used a wire brush here. Big mistake! The steel from the wire gets embedded into the magnesium and causes rapid decay.
So I media blasted the case to clean that up. Clean magnesium will oxidize into a pile of white powder with some gears in the middle unless it is protected by something.
Oxygen can get through paint so that will not stop the decay. I used chromium trioxide solution to passivate the surface prior to epoxy primer. That was a lot of effort to do safely. The stuff is extremely toxic.
Like a bronzed baby shoe.
I will install the axles and RGB with the transaxle in place.

I'd recommend putting the axles, tubes and RGB's together before putting the trans in, as you wont be able to accurately set the end play in the axles with the gaskets, in the bus. Also one of the side cover nuts is partially blocked by the frame horns. You dont want a leak in this area |

Ditto. Plus you do not want those axles to be too loose or too tight, but just right. Doing that in situ will be a major pain. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

|
|
I had considered those issues too. Moving a fully loaded rear end in is no walk in the park either. I had heard it would be difficult to install axles and RGB with trans mounted but I had never tried it myself until now. It took three tries to get the end play right with the correct number of gaskets. I use a twisting motion to check. My box wrench was able to reach the bottom cover nut as well. I cannot say which I like better. Perhaps I had less chance of scratched paint this way. Each procedure has it's merits. I would do it again.
Parts clean, clean, clean!
I used a brake drum clamped to my steel table to hold the stub axle for torquing the nut. That is the breaker bar and socket I used. I almost forgot to put in the upper bearing first before I peened the new nut.
I used a large nut, washer and bolt to draw the axle out into the bearing far enough to get the circlip on. VW threaded the end of the axle. How thoughtful.
If you butter up both sides of your gasket it won't know which way to fall on the floor.
Inside of the RGB housing. I used Loctite 680 Bearing Retainer on all the bearings.
Bead of RTV around the bearing before the brake backing plate.
I used this photo the next morning to confirm I had put both O rings on and used sealer. (edit) Only small O ring was used.
Spring plates will have to wait until the rotisserie is off so I used the shock to hold the axle in place for now.
The driver side RGB is one of today's projects.

Killer and museumesque.
Did you use a gasket also between the RGB housing and the backing plate? Only the little o-ring (stub axle one) is used on bus, fwiw. |

Thanks BarryL. I did take that extra O ring out. Only had one gasket in the kit. Used only RTV on the back of plate.
The bug does not have an interesting history. Yet...
Transaxle nosecone and mount are stock VW.
I piled up the shims and O ring on the axle so I don't have to press off the bearing each time I do a test fit. I pulled each new gasket through the hole and torqued it down. When it had the right "feel" I used RTV on the O ring not the gaskets. I ripped the unused gaskets off. It took four gaskets on this side and only one on the other.
